Default SRR 4.7 d series FD making noise

so after getting my SRR 4.7FD installed my tranny makes a whinning noise on accel/decel in gear or out so does anyone else's do this or was mine installed improperly. i reasoned to my self that maybe the gears are cut different, but i want to be sure.

thanks.

I hope that is common because my 4.9 does the same.

I believe the noise comes from the fact that the gears are straight cut instead of helical.

no, they are mesh style gears, exact same as the stock type found in your tranny, just different ratio.

this is straight cut...

Here's your stock gear..., the same as the SRR or ATS set

Did you remember to clearance the housing around the ring gear?

I would not be able to tell (if it were "whining") as its in my racecar & I couldn't hear it if it was.
However I have used it for about 800 race miles so far, and am quite pleased.

I have a whining noise which is most prominent at cruising speeds around 35mph.
It is common.

I dunno what cleaance you are talking about for the ring gear. You shouldn't have to change anything in regards to that, unless you had problems to begin with. Since the bearings are what determines the clearances in the diff, and those don't need to be removed forthe ring gear install.

Thanks to R.CREW (DP, Ken, Anthony) for installing SRR 4.7 FD + OBX LSD into my spare S20 tranny. Just installed the tranny this afternoon. The FD is SO noisy, I can hardly stand it... and I wear ear plugs usually. Since the FD is helical cut just like stock, I really don't understand why it whines so loudly. They had to clearance the case by quite a bit to clear the OBX/SRR assembly.

The SRR FD is a bit taller than the stock as seen in this pix:

Some grinding was necessary to allow the FD/LSD assembly to spin freely:

closer look of the grinding; it actually needed a lot more but i didn't take more pix.

missing a small chunk there! also the machining is not that smooth compare to stock.

my sohc vtec car is basically a race car with out cage (ie, fully stripped interior, nothing under the dash (no heater/fan), no sound deadening material... etc. etc. so it is loud. just put in Hasport race mounts (omg too damn harsh, would not go this stiff in retrospect since i street drive this car all the times). but the whine from the FD still comes through easily. drive me nuts and i only drove it like 15 mins so far today. i'm theorizing perhaps we didn't clearance it enough so once everything was assembled the FD/LSD is rubbing the casing slightly?!? i'll try to video tape it and see what you guys think.

ohh man don't start again. it's not the country. it's the QC/design ppl that's responsible.

i run the 4.7 in my car, never ever hear any whinning at all. 2 other ran or did run them too, one was a 4.7 the other was a 4.9, they never heard any whinning as fair as i know. I have driven one of the cars at slow speed and never head any whinning either.

edit on a side note, there was a thread, maybe 1.5 years ago in the EG/civic forum about this FD shatering. Other then that i haven't heard of any failures.

Im not sure why but it seems like NO ONE can make a GREAT FD for a honda, ATS, housmen(sp), SRR, all have at least one documented break. Not to mention they are SUPER expenisve.

seems like RWD guys FD or ring and pinions are cheaper and hole up better.

i did installed the OBX LSD at the same time. so the noise could (possibly?) come from it too... sucks when there are 2 variables...

I have a SRR 4.7 and OBX that I installed at the same time. I did not need to clear anything, and yes it whines. I have had 8-9 weekends of racing on them. I have opened the trans a couple times since install and do not see anything to worry about. I think the OBX is what is whining.

Obviously my whine could be different from your whine. You may like red while I like white

Anyone else have any updates on this?

As far as I can tell, my transmission is holding up fine. However, the car is not daily driven.

Guys,

As the major Distributor of SRR Final Drives in the U.S. It is obviously a concern to me if people are having problems...
After breaking three Final Drives from a Leading manufacturer in one season, I have been running both the 4.7 and the 4.9 SRR Final Drives in my #66 jdm 2.0 Integra since the beginning of 2004 with no issues what so ever.
Fortunately, of the many SRR Final Drives we have supplied to customers in 2005 we have so far recorded only 2 catastrophic failures... Even though these are race parts and of course carry no warranty, We are still concerned.
For the sake of our customers. Special Projects Motor Sports is carring out independant testing with a leading Metalurgest, trying to determine the exact cause of these failures in order to improve the product.
We will contact all of our customers should we discover any retro- remidies such as R.E.M.Polishing (Testing in our Race cars now) or Kryogenic treatment which may prove to prolong the life of the SRR Final drives.

Thanks to everyone for your constructive comments.

There are lots of reasons besides inferior parts that can cause drivetrain stuff to break. It's not exactly an idiot proof piece of equipment you're messing with when you install one.

I've got the OBX LSD/SRR FD 4.9 installed and did not noticed any increased noise from the oe setup. One issue with the OBX was the head of one of the allen cap screws that holds the unit together was not recessed as low as the remaining allen cap screws. This single screw barely scraped the web on transmission casing. At speed, this would have made a helleva racket. I simply removed the screw, cut 1.5mm off the threads and reinstalled.

No issues with either the OBX or 4.9 in three race weekends and numerous testing days. Does make for a really short 1st gear though. Plus if I'm not mistaken, the negative press on the SRR drives was limited to the 4.7 with no mention of issues with the 4.9.

Good luck
