Icon7 Race report Edo Motorsports Acura Integra

As we were prepping for the last race of the season we didn’t have an engine in the car until the final week. Due to a mechanical issue our main race engine failed during the Willow Springs round of the season. So we started to gather some parts to put our backup engine together in order to finish the season and try to claim the 2014 MotoIQ Championship. A stock sleeved B20 block was used with the capability to spin up to 9K RPM. After we sourced a set of pistons from RS Machine we salvaged anything we could from the blown motor. Interestingly enough only thing we didn’t reuse was the sleeved block and the burnt pistons. The remaining parts were freshened up and reused. The head was serviced by Joe Alaniz of Alaniz Racing Cylinder Heads and then the engine was put together by Edo Motorsports. Once the engine was installed back into the car and broken in, the motor oil was changed out by top of the line MOTUL oil and up next was to get the MFactory Integra on the Dyno. TurboJoe answered our call again and came to tune the Monster. With smaller 84mm pistons compared to the previous 84.5mm pistons and a lower 11.7:1 compression compared to the previous 12:1 compression, Joe worked with the AEM ECU and the new COP kit and managed to make 1HP better than the previous bigger engine. A testament to how excellent he is at tuning engines and one of the best out there.

The MFactory sponsored #78 Acura Integra was ready to take on Buttonwillow’s famous 13CW configuration. We arrived at the track in the morning on Saturday and started preparing the car for the first session of the weekend. Car ran very healthy, with the engine and everything normal for the practice session. The MFactory LSD worked very well as usual and the Syncrotech Gearbox shifted like butter. In the qualifying session, Edo drove the lights out of the car and set one of the fastest time for our class and qualified first with an excellent time of 01:56.531.

The race start worked out well for Edo as he started pulling away from the 2nd place car and had a few second lead until halfway into the race when the car started misfiring. A few laps later the Vtec would not come on and driver Edo noticed that the gauges stopped working and the tachometer was skipping. Edo realized that this was an electrical issue and decided to stay out as long as possible and collect valuable points for the championship. Sam Rothschild in his new TU CRX worked his way close to Edo with every lap and was able to get by in the end. Edo did the smart move and nursed the car to a 2nd place finish for Saturday. The 2nd place finish gave Edo enough points to lock down the MotoIQ TU Championship for the 2nd year consecutive year for the MFactory #78 Acura Integra.

Sunday Morning came by, and even though the championship was secured, Edo Motorsports decided to attempt to fix the Electrical issue in time for Sunday’s race. The practice session was skipped to give more time for troubleshooting. The issue was traced down to the alternator not charging, so the team had to get a new one from a local shop. Our friends stepped in to help and Edo’s dad and Honda Robert went on a journey to find one for the race. Qualifying was getting close so it was decided to run the car with the alternator not charging. So the car battery was fully charged and a small battery charger brought by GaryAra was also used to run the qualifying session. Edo ran the car as hard as he could and ran a blazing fast time of 1:55.09 which is very impressive time for a 200hp race car in any racing series. After the qualifying session, the new alternator was installed and the car was prepped for the race. As soon as the green flag dropped Edo knew something was wrong with the race car as it felt under powered. On the next lap it started sputtering again so instead of hurting the engine Edo pulled out of the race to end a very successful season. Edo and Edo Motorsports would like to thank the individuals and companies who helped us to get the necessary wings this season and ultimately the 2014 MotoIQ TU Championship.

Awesome! You made it look like you were walking on water. The gearing is so suited for that road course and the car is so neutral. I would love to get details suspension set up for that run? I'm a racer-wannabe. So, no competition from here. LOL!

Feature Car: Edik Stepanyan's DA Acura Integra

I don't know how much Edo has changed the car since that article was written, but I'm sure he'll talk with you about it.

Thanks "1998GsRIntegra". I got tons of info I needed out of the link. I do have two questions for either you or Edik:

1. What are the gearing ratios on the GSR tranny? <<-- My most needed answer

2. Since the "dampers are Koni Custom Order and Valved 2812s", why still using the front “Ground Control Upper Mounts”?

There is no doubt that the driver (Edik) is the winning factor behind this winning DA-Chassis Acura Integra.

THANKS,
Chris

Oh no problem at all. I have no idea what kind of gearing setup he's using, but I doubt it's stock. Reasonably safe bet that he's using some mfactory parts. You could probably call mfactory and ask.

As far as the dampers go, just a guess, but maybe he needed the extra travel.

In the Article the gearing was just a OEM 94+ GSR. with Mfactort lsd and 4.92 final.
This year we are running GSR 1-2 and b16 3-4-5 with Mfactory LSD and 4.92 Final drive.

When I first saw "gearing was just a OEM 94+ GSR", I was thinking "No way!"....and it makes sense when I saw "4.92" fd. I have to go back and compare gearing ratio(3, 4, 5) between GSR and B16.
Thanks Edo for the info.
