Kinsmen Kart Club Practice @ Dixon, CA 6/8/08 Gremlin Edition
So it has been awhile since I have updated anything here. It was simply because I haven't been to the track.
I finally got my kart all put back together with my Woltjer setup and headed out to Dixon for the first time this year. We were hoping that by sticking with fresh 100 octane Sunoco gas that my damaging engines would be a thing of the past. After posting my engine woes on some karting forums, many suggested that I do not mix 110 with 91 (50/50) as that was not a very clean way of getting 100 octane.
It was warm at the Kinsmen track and I was getting anxious to getting some seat time. I did some final adjustments, filled the kart with gas and suited up.
With a push start I am off. Knowing that the kart has a fresh motor with a brand spanking new top end I go around the track very slowly. I did not get into the pipe until I had 3 laps in and the temps have risen to triple digits. Then I started to slowly open it up.
The tires on the kart were from last season and Buttonwillow. So after a couple of more aggressive laps, I started to put my foot in it. I quickly realized that I was not auditioning for D1 so I should back off a bit on exits. The kart was singing nicely and I was happy.
I was with SVH and he brought out the 125. After some adjustments he got out and had some seat time. He came back into the pits to adjust the carb. The slide was not opening completely which meant he did not have WOT and any point of the track.
We also had some friends come out and get some seat time. There was a fellow HT'er who was very interested in getting into karting. After some email exchange, he came out and was able to pilot a shifter. He did good for his first time out. After some laps under his belt, I could hear that he would "start" to get into the pipe but quickly lifted. I have a feeling that that shifter bug has bitten him and he soon will be part of the Shifter Mafia soon.
When I went out again, I did notice that my temps were hitting 120-125 which is unusually high for my kart. I should have sensed the disturbance in the force. But instead, we ate lunch.
After lunch we got back into it. The 125 went out a couple of times and then I tried to get the 80 out. It just wouldn't start. So The SVH thought that plug was fouled. I take out the plug to find that the plug is not fouled. It is broken. The electrode was missing. it can only go one way. It bounced and mashed up the head and piston and went out the exhaust. We took off the head and saw more disturbing scenes of horror.
The piston and head were chewed up, that I knew. But the same edge destruction on the cylinder wall and head were showing up again! After some phone calls to other karters, a theory was made. If you lose an electrode on a plug, 9 times out of 10, you have a bad ignition. A bad ignition would cause detonation if the curves were out of whack. But how is my ignition bad??? Does anyone remember this post:
The wire on my ignition was damaged last year @ a cross over race @ Dixon. I soldered it back together at the track and thought nothing of it. Now I wonder if this has been the gremlin that I have been feeding past midnight.
I'll ohm out my ignition system this week and see if that is the problem. I am hoping it is because I may not be able to save this woltjer setup again. I'll have pics of the damage as well.
But to pick me up from my duldrums, I was able to pilot The SVH's 125 on Sunday. I made myself "fit" enough in the kart to drive it around the track. The first thing on my mind is this shouldn't be legal! Crazy power and crazy brakes. That pretty much sums it all up.
Pics to follow shortly.

Put the kids away, it gets pretty horrific from here on out:
How the plug should look like:
What came out of the engine:
Damage to the piston and cylinder:
And damage to the head:
After doing some troubleshooting, I was able to find a defective coil in my ignition system. It is supposed to read 13k but read open. I checked a friend's coil and it was reading 13.6k. My coil and stator need to be replaced. I hope that is all the problem I have. Having an kart with an appetite for engines is not fun.

I was briefly excited to see four kart threads on the front page of RR/AX, and I thought Mario would just about cream his jeans over such a thing. But after looking at each one, the only thing I have to say is, "WTF IS UP WITH REVIVING ALL THE OLD THREADS?!?" That one was SIX years old! Junkyard, pay attention to thread dates dude!
