Default Insurance when racing

I am working to get a trailer so I will not need to register and insure the car, but it made me think about liability if or when in an accident for any type of racing event. If you drive off course and run someone over or push someone off that causes them to crash etc.

I'm I liable for the accident, get sued, liable for damages etc?

I know there is racing insurance, but when do I really need to worry about getting it.

thanks

I don't know of any company that insures your race car while it is racing. If that coverage is available, it won't be affordable for a club racer.

There is insurance for whenever the car isn't racing. Covers theft and loss while towing etc. Someone here on HT reported $20,000 of coverage for about $250 per year.

The clubs typically have sufficient coverage. But yeah, I worry about a wheel popping off on a straight and barreling through a crowd, or something else bad.

i figured the clubs would cover, but it is always good to check. I will look into the non racing insurance. I've read that some home insurance won't cover cars even if they are stolen from the garage. I guess it depends on the insurance provider.

I found

http://www.parishheacock.com/q...=Race

And Your Quick Quote Is... $250*
*This quick quote is an estimate of how little it can costs to insure your classic car with Parish Heacock. CLICK HERE to receive a firm quote for your classic car insurance. This estimate is based on 3,000 road miles per year and includes; Comp. & Collision, $50,000 liability & Uninsured Motorist coverage.

Will have to find out all the details but it looks good so far

I tried to get a quote from those guys but you have to be atleast 30 for them to cover you. Sounds good though.

Just to clarify... if you read the rules/regulations and the Application for Race car insurance on that website, it ONLY covers the car when its NOT racing.

"Policy excludes racing, race testing, speed trials, and on-track or similar events."

Yes, I understood that. It is assumed or understood by most people that the club hosting the event should cover if anything happens on course, not that it will cover my car but any casualties. I understand that if something happens to my car I am SOL. But I like the fact that the car will be covered if it gets stolen from storage or off the trailer at an event.

While your normal insurance company may not cover it during driving, I have comprehensive coverage on mine. I spoke with my agent, and they said it would only be covered for the amount of the car (not all the extra race goodies I put in it). My reason for getting the insurance coverage is a bit different - I'm using a tow dolly and need CT plates on the car.

There are several people who drive their cars to the track and have full coverage. Now of course if something happens while racing, they can't put a claim into the insurance company. You may be able to if using it at a HPDE, but you'd need to get your insurance policy's list of exclusions first. (Be sure to get it in writing.)

There is in fact racing insurance to cover your car while racing. Chris Derecola had it, coincidentally when he wrecked his car and had to get cut out of it.
~$500 cost to insure per race, and $5k deductible.

The pricing varies depending on the value amount you choose to be covered and the amount of the deductible you are willing to eat.

The program functions on a no-fault basis and covers the cost to replace damaged parts plus mechanical and bodyshop labour. Only wheels, tires, taxes and shipping costs are excluded. Everything else including paint and graphics is covered without exclusion.

For GA Rolex coverage for a 3 hour event with $75,000 coverage ranges from 3,250 to 5,000 depending on 10k, 15k, or 20k dedectible. To have 100k coverage with 10K deductible at the Miller 9hr will take a check of $10,750. This coverage is for the whole event weekend, including pre race test days, and covers all drivers.

As far as club racing goes, if you plan enduroing a bunch, it may be worth having the sharing drivers buy a policy at an appropriate amount.

Mine was $15k of coverage for $250/day and a $2500 deductible. I ended up with ~$12k in damage (basic write-off) so it worked out for me. Ironically enough I haven't insured it since the aforementioned roof cutting incident.
