Default How to lower the steering wheel?

With a bucket seat and low rails the steering wheel on an EG can become a little too high for comfort, even at the lowest setting.

Has anyone lowered the steering wheel? Is it OK for me to put a small washer between the steering column and part #3? Actually does anyone know what this part does and how important it is? It is described as "PLATE, ABSORBING" on the parts catalog.

Thanks!

I have seen this method done before using either washers or spacers.
If you need more than an inch of lowering, the hardware will probably need to be changed.
Make sure you use the proper grade hardware (grade 8) automotive if you must extend it.

FYI make sure the steering column doesn't bind (lock out to lock out after you achieve your desired height.

I have a 1/2 inch delrin spacer on my car right now with factory mounting studs/hardware.
As mentioned above. Anything much more that that it would be needed to use longer hardware. With the 1/2 spacer I do not have any binding in the steering.

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll go with something like 5 mm as a starting point.
BTW, did you keep the "absorbing plate"?

Are you referring to #2 in the diagram? I'll see if I can snap some photos.

Here is a pic of mine. (don't mind all the over spray) I did keep the small piece. #2 in the diagram plus the 1/2 spacer. This has been in the car for about 2 years and never had any issues. I double check it every few events to see if it comes loose, it never has.

Thanks man, I really appreciate you taking the time to help!

You kept the absorbing plate, it's the long horizontal piece in your picture, #3 in the parts diagram. I wonder what it does really, perhaps dampen vibration?

Any vibration that those small plastic pieces are supposed to suppress is going to be negated in a race car since everything is so much stiffer. I would say use them if you have them, but ultimately it will not make a difference to how the steering column will feel or function.
