How to get Toyo RA-1 tires close to nothing
Guys,
in the light of spec tire rule and some of you will have to get new sizes, there is a way to get tires close to nothing. That is if you use 235/40/17 size or bigger.
AS most of you know in Speed WC, we have to buy new tires every race. Most of the tires from touring car still have at least 1 weekend left. Most bigger team throw this away. Go to Vilven tire booth, and ask for those tires. These people will be happy that you take them out of their hands so they don't need to be troubled with disposing them.
My experience is that the tires last at least a couple of weekend more. Might be worthwhile to go to SWC race with a big truck and pick what you can.

Agreed. From the 2006 HC rules:

Yup.. agreed.. I was the LeMans in Portland last year and the Toyo/Hankook booths were getting rid of the take-offs for $10/ea, you pick from the pile.

Home to Road Atlanta (Round Trip): 1190mi
My truck's avg. mileage: 7mpg (Gotta love a 454)
Avg. cost of 87 octane: $2.40
Cost of hotel (1 night): $65 if I'm luck or cheap
Cost of crappy road food: $20
Approximate fuel cost for picking up free tires: $408
Kosei K1's (17x7): 4x$180
Total cost of four free tires: $1213. I bet I could knock at least $100 off by going to Lime Rock or Mid Ohio.

Well, you can do the same thing with just about any tire in any size.
Most of the trackside guys will let you dig through their discards and take what you want. Again, it saves them disposal fees.
I did 3 years of Solo I on Hoosiers grabbed from behind the Appalachian Tire trailer.
The only problem is that you sometimes pay to have a tire mounted an balanced and then discover a leak or puncture you didn't see. There are also sometimes thin spots you didn't catch and you get cords after running them once or twice.
I stopped doing this when I went racing. Just too much at stake to risk doing it on someone elses throw aways.
And good luck getting a wide 17" tire on a CRX. Folks are struggling with 15s.
