....GODDAMMIT KARL!!!!
I absolutely swear the following is 100% accurate.
I talk to Karl Sunday:
K: "Hey, how's the van going?"
M: "Great! Got all the leaky stuff fixed and I've been driving it around all weekend. It's running great! Can't wait to tow next weekend, finally! Right now I'm flushing the radiator and replacing the radiator hoses."
K: "Well, at the very least you've replaced alot of old wear items with new parts. Should be good for a while"
M: "All I have to do is get the A/C charged and I'm good to tow"
4 hours later....seriously...
I drive the van to Monterrey Mexican restaurant...well...because I *can*. After I'm done and pay the bill, I go to start the van and get the horrible "I'm not gonna start but at least it sounds like metal-scraping-on-metal" sound from the starter. WTF??? That's a goddmamn brand new part?!?!? Maybe I was halucinating, because I know this less-than-1-month old starter with *maybe* 30 start attempts in the last 3 weeks didn't just take a crap.
Oh, it took a crap alright.
It likes to engage the flywheel only about 1 out of 4 times. Good stuff So when I finally get it started and home, park it, take Karl's name in vain, I decide to fix it Monday (as if I could have @ 9:00 on a Sunday in Shelby)
Took the POS starter back to Autozone where they tested it and confirmed it was a busted POS. At least they didn't have another on the shelf, and niether did Advance down the street. Did I mention I have an appointment to get the A/C fixed tomorrow morning? F#cking Shelby, NC.
Finally found one, but had to drive a while to get it. It's on and it starts again. For now. Unless I talk to Karl again.
On the upside, I can now change the **** out of a Ford 7.3L diesel starter. Had the old one off in 15 minutes, had the new one on in under 10.
Cliff notes: Karl sucks, starters suck, Shelby sucks.

There was so much more to this story but I don't remember it. All I DO remember is that within a day or 2 of having this convo (and visiting Karl's house) the brakes on the GSR went south and I broke off a caliper stud trying to fix them.

Re: ....GODDAMMIT KARL!!!! (Evil Drew M)
Drew, I think there was something about the newly assembled desk busting the monitor by launching it through a freshly painted wall, then finding out the water heater let go again and upon inspection of the offending appliance, finding a spider with millions of babies on its back which scared him out of the house which lead him to the attempted lawn rehydration. I think... it's hard to remember stories individually because you die laughing after everyone of them due to Karl's storytelling ability.

Re: ....GODDAMMIT KARL!!!! (WRXRacer111)
due to Karl's storytelling ability.
Exactly.
Karl's stories stick in our heads and give us all a good laugh. And they have built this reputation of his, which he goes along with as an excellent sport. But the reality is that Karl's **** doesn't bust any more than the rest of us.
Sure, he's had halfshaft problems lately, but so did Corey in 2002. Corey's issues were worse than Karl's, but because he didn't turn it into a funny story we've all forgotten about it.
At my house so far this year we've had a busted AC unit, busted water heater, busted pool pump, busted lawn mower(s), and tomato eating frogs. At the race track we lost a clutch 30 seconds after rolling the car off the trailer at Roebling Road. Not only did the car not make it to the track, it didn't make it to it's paddock spot.
Karl had nothing to do with any of this. Its fun to say he did, but I'm starting to actually agree with Adam that sometimes Karl behaves as though he believes this stuff is true (which it certainly isn't). I do not believe in "self fulfilling prophecy," but I do believe that a person starting to actually believe that they are a jinx is not healthy. I think Karl is actually starting to believe he's a jinx.
Buy an old Ford van and put a hooptie autozone starter on it and its not such a stretch to think that said cheapo hooptie starter might be a piece of **** straight from the box. Not Karl's fault.
Dear running in front of you and totaling your car... Not Karl.
Forgetting to tighten his brake caliper bolt or bleeder screw and losing his brakes... Karl. But not because he's a jinx, because he's a flakey, forgetful bastard.
Scott, who loves Karl like a brother and, as silly as it seems, thinks its time for the "Karl busted my ****" threads to stop. I still want the stories because they are funny as ****, but let's let it end there.
PS - Karl is crewing for our 13 hour enduro team and co-driving my car in some enduros next year. Karl is not a jinx and we'll prove it by winning some tough races in a car that isn't half-assed.
PS2 - Sure does seem like the one with the most busted **** shapes up to be Matt, not Karl. Maybe Matt is actually the one who's the jinx .
Exactly.

On an unrelated note, here are some diesel ford websites, should you need info:
http://www.thedieselstop.com
flatratetechs.com, no www. Go to this site, then go to message forums, take the first selection in message forums and you will find a diesel forum.
Also, should you decide to stop paying for fuel, http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x
Diesels rock.

Only because Karl has sold the majority of his busted ****. And I'll have you know the "almost $2004 Challenge" SE-R that sat dormant as long as the van is by FAR the best vehicle I own right now. No runs/drips/errors, 30+ mpg, I have put brake pads (big surprise, right?) on it and that's ALL. I guess I used up all my luck when I bought it...

Re: ....GODDAMMIT KARL!!!! (MaddMatt)
Matt: too funny!
What Matt didn't say in this ppost was that the van was PERFECT (Well, it ran) but then he called Karl and the next morning the van decided to start to leak coolant and not start.
To answer someone's earlier questoin Karl co-founded Honda Challenge with Scott. We all bugged them enough so that they both left.....

That is correct. The 2 things (talk to Karl, van starts leaking) may not be related, but the timeline is accurate.
