Default Polishing Rust Question

Decided to completely sand down my hood and polish it. Sanded it in p400,p600,p800,1000,2000 and got a nice shine from it, then out the Mothers aluminum polish. It looked nice untill it rained, it started getting these brown markers mixed with some neochrome. Read Polish was supposed to prevent that? Only option to clear coat?

Clearcoat is not meant to stick to bare metal. You will have adhesion problems.

It worked on my bike frame just fine but once it got scratched it was rust city. Driving around with an unfinished hood is just a whole different and stupid thing though.

I know this to be true as well but have seen quite a few rat rod's with what appeared to be clear coated bare metal. Not sure what it is really.

They might have used a MCU, which will adhere for a while. (Like a clearcoat POR15). They'll all fail in the end though, plus they change the luster of the material.
