Pictures of the Rust on my car! What can I do about it?!
Hey guys i need some opinions here. ok heres the deal: this is my 93 del sol with a recently swapped jdm type r b18c. i love the car but i have some minor rust on it and i dont know if anything can be done about it. i need a paint job big time and i want to re-do the exterior body work and everything, but i dont want to put the money in to it if the bottom if it is going to rot out from underneath me. if its not repairable im going to get a new southern car perhaps a civic or integra, something i can use my motor in. i dont want to get rid of the car but im not about to dump a bunch more money into a car that im not gonna have 10 years from now because of rust. take a look and tell me what you think.

yeah that is not too bad... make sure to soak those bolts down with something to break them loose without... breaking them

I wouldn't worry about that too much. If you really can't sleep at night over this, then you could de-rust ( i use naval jelly on my bicycle every year ) and paint ( 30lb_em1 mentioned truck bed liner, i'd personally do that!! ) the part of the body that has rusted.
As for the line supports and clamps, you could replace those with ones off another car, but when you break the bolts loose, they are probably going to snap right off. In that case, you have to use something to remove the screwed in side of the bolt.. in my integra i drilled out some bolts like that, and put a slightly thicker bolt inside. Serious pain in the butt, but prevented stuff from rusting through even more.
I drive a car that came from a salted-road area and my brake assembly is probably rusted beyond repair/pad replacement, so i know where you're at bro

whats naval jelly and where can i get it? also have you heard about some kind of primer called POR that you spray right on rust and it supposedly stops it? my friend who works at a body shop tells me that they use it on all the old muscle car rebuilds and that it works real well.

That isn't bad at all. The metal underneath most liked isn't even rotted. I'd just undercoat and go on your way if you're really that worried. Wire brush the brackets and put some paint on them. That really isn't anything to worry about, I've taken cars apart that make that look like it's new, you're fine.

i got naval jelly at a pacific home do-it center. it's a pinkish goo-substance.
I haven't heard about this POR stuff.
I should post pics of my car. Mine has the kind of rust that turns dark red.. it's like final stage cancer.. you guys will get a kick ;p

check it out. google POR rust inhibitor or rust bullet you may find it useful on your own car.

If you are willing to spend a few days with a grinder and wire wheel giver. If not get some Rust Proof in a can there like $6 bones. 2 or 3 cans would soak it good. Put the car on jack stands. Wash it with some Diluted simple green and use a nylon brush to scrub the loose crap away. Wash it with a hose and use ur hands to wipe it around. Let it dry for at least a day. If you can hit it with a air compressor. Next day hit it with some rust Proof on the seams let it dry for a bit then ur done.
I do this on my truck before winter and its staying rust free since.
