It depends on the condition of the existing paint. You need to remove the existing paint by sanding it down (manually or power). You will need grit 600 - 1000 depend on the paint condition.

Basically, you will remove the paint entirely and then smooth the surface down to prepare for Primer.

Check out some youtube videos on how to paint.....thats a good start.

What grit sand paper depends on what the manufacture says the max adheasion is for that primer. You need to seal the bottom layers out first with EPOXY primer, then you use surfacer then seal again and base and clear.

Primer is a filler it is meant to cover bondo/putty so the 80-150 grit sand scratches and pin holes are not showing anymore...
so when primering a car sand the car between 220-320 grit nothing else, because if you get to fine the primer will not stick and peel later down the road

if you get to bare metal you need either a metal conditioner or a epoxy primer then wet on wet technic of a high build primer over top ...because epoxy primers take about a couple days to dry before you can really sand it

sealer is only needed for car paints mostly transparent colors/candy paint
yet a sealer makes it easier to make a color cover quicker

Sand all the old paint off, wipe car down with prep solvent, and then spray on Epoxy Primer. After that you put on high build primer and block the car till its straight. If you have to apply any body filler sand those areas down to bare metal, fill, sand, epoxy, then high build. Tip: be careful if you sand with power tools, you don't want to put a lot of heat in the metal and warp it. Lot of good tips over here: http://www.autobody101.com/forums/

Epoxy is also corrosion protection on bare metal. It can also be your asheasion promoter ontop of old paint aswell as seal out anything you dont want bleeding through.

My first question is why are you wanting to primer it? Are you going to reprint it? Does it need bodywork? If your answers to these questions are NO then I wouldn't prime it. Is the paint fading or the clear coat fading?
