Default DIY Interior Paint Job (In a Del Sol)

After browsing through the forums at work I decided to try to do an interior paint job to cover up all the gray areas on my cars interior.

WARNING: I am by no means a professional, nor do I have any experience with this at all I simply am making a DIY. I am using information by people who have done this and posted up their results and procedures. Any damage you do to your car is not my problem and I am assuming no responsibility if you do so.

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, I'm using a 2mega pixel camera phone, as I do not have a digital camera.

Paint and Materials
After review the popular choice of paint seems to be a brand called SEM. After calling around a few stores I found the paint at NAPA. Everything else can be picked up at a local convenience store.

The Landau Black gives a stock black color. I picked up 3 cans of the Landau Black that's used on "FLEXIBLE & RIGID PLASTICS, CARPET, VINYL".
Each can costs about $11

I also picked up a can of "PLASTIC ADHESION PROMOTER" from SEM. This is used for better adhesion for the color coat.
Cost is $16

Scotch-Brite scuff pad (ultra fine)
Degreaser (Simple Green) I couldn't find any Simple Green so I got a Oxi Clean spray
A bottle of rubbing alcohol
Blue painters tape

I stole some blue latex gloves from work, you don't really need them if you don't want your hands to be horribly irritated. This paint, and all the chemicals are pretty nasty, so do this in a well ventilated area, or outside.

Approximate cost of all materials $65

*****************

My doors have a black bottom and gray top to them.

After taking the door cover off the door I took it inside to prep it

First I used the degreaser to take any oils that would prevent paint from actually adhering to it. I just sprayed it on (that's a fair amount I used) and used a rag to rub it down until it was gone.

After it sat for a minute I used some rubbing alcohol to dry up any left over residue. Same process only I applied it to the rag and then wiped down the door panel
(note: I'm trying to do this once so I don't have to do it again)

I actually forgot to take the top piece off the door that meets the window. Whatever that is called. To take it off I just used a screw driver to bend the metal prongs back so it can be removed.

Here is the door cleaned from oils and dirt.

I start masking off the top piece from the bottom, I'm not repainting the already black pieces because they are not faded , only the horrible crease where the arm sits. I used my credit card to get the painters tape in as far as possible.

The next thing to do is use the scuff pad to rough up the texture so the plastic adhesive promoter stays on nice and strong. The SEM cans suggest using all their products and sanding with a 400 grit piece of sand paper. I personally stayed away from the sand paper because I was afraid it might hurt the vinyl to much.

Before

After

You can't see much of a difference but the scuff pad is slightly abrasive and does just what it's name suggests, scuffs.

*********

Well that was as far as I got last night, today I got off work early and went to the DMV to get my title because I never received it, and to reregister my car.

So I took my car to the hobby shop on base and started taking parts of my car inside, first is my door.

I didn't want to get paint on the black, it's already black, so I covered it up with some newspaper.

I sprayed the first layer of adhesive on, and it started drying.

I used the scuff pad to lightly rub over all the surface again, then sprayed down another layer of the paint.

This is when the second layer dried about 10 minuets later.

Here I layed down the first layer of Landau Black paint.

And here is the second layer

DON'T FORGET I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL, I GOT BETTER AS TIME PROGRESSED, this one, not so great.

I started working on some other parts as the door started to dry, it looks to be doing quite nice.

And after a while I removed the tape (I know i probably should have waited longer but I just wanted to see exactly how the paint was matching up)

Well that's pretty much all the soft cooshy vinyl, there's a couple of other pieces I'll add in later.

So now I've got some hard plastic, a bit different, same steps, i just used a tougher rougher and greener scuff pad on it

Here it is after I pulled it off.

NOTE!!: Some of these parts were really effin dirty and being somewhat OCD I had to just clean the whole thing, especially because as I was holding it some of the dirt got on my fingers and i put on the front, yuck.

After I sprayed it down and rubbed one out.

Using some rubbing alcohol to dry it all up.

And with the tougher rougher, green scuff pad.

First coat of adhesive.

Once again I lightly scuffed inbetween coats, and sprayed down another quickie.

The first layer of paint.

And the second pretty much dried.

**********

So that's the 2 different materials that cover all the interior of the car, hard plastic and the vinyl.

I continued painting other parts that had left and rights, so now we can look at them side by side, 1 being gray and the other after I worked on it.

Here are the left and right seat belt seat belt covers.
The left one is all cleaned and scuffed, the right has been untouched.

The bottom one here has been sprayed with adhesive once and the top one cleaned.

Scuffed after the first layer and the second coat put on.

Left side is obviously painted, the right one is about to have the first layer of adhesive put on it.

I wore latex gloves during all of this because the degreaser is pretty nasty, and the paint cans have a warning label on them, something about causing cancer, I want to avoid that. Also I'm wearing them to prevent any oils on my fingers to cause a blemish.

The right one is finished and the left one has 2 layers of adhesive on it now.

When I was pulling these parts off I was trying to be as careful as could be, but those damn clips did not want to come out peacefully and they broke, here's a little crack it made in the plastic, once I sprayed over it, you could barley see it.

********

Now the cans have directions to let the paint sit undisturbed for 24 hours, so I layed out all the parts to dry over night. These are all the parts I have painted so far. The parts I still have to do are the pillars and the sun visors and the piece on the top between the pillars. I also have not done the driver side door yet.

********

UPDATE

Sadly I slept through the hours the shop was open because I had a bad headache, I did get the rest of the parts taken off. The pillars sun visors and company. the only thing left would be the targa and the drivers door panel.

Maybe I missed it. So would you recommend doing this? I want to do this to my ENTIRE integra (besides the seats and carpet). I just dont want it looking not factory.

I'm trying to remember all the pieces of the integra that are different colored from the dash, mine was all black except the pillars and everything above that area..

I'm not recommending it, I'm just throwing it out there as an option. Everyone that has posted using the SEM paint has little or no complaints. Here's another thread with more pictures and different cars, I haven't uploaded any pictures of the interior back in my car (YET) so maybe this can help you come to a decision. https://honda-tech.com/forums/paint-body-84/good-method-painting-interior-plastics-%2A%2Anot-ricer-thread-please-read%2A%2A-2114271/

Nice job.

Another suggestion for painting interior plastic pieces, just wipe it down with a wax and grease remover and then paint with Krylon Fusion plastic paint. That's what I did on mine (black) and it turned out great.
