Default My Mazda Build

Okay..so it is a Mazda powerplant, in a Ford..

Built a mild nitrous motor a few years back and lost the motor with only 12k on it due to a failed oil pump (didn't like seeing 8k rpm).

So this time I am doing it 'big'.

.020" overbore 12:1 Custom Wiseco Pistons
SCAT Ford 5.4" Rods
External Wet Sump Oiling
Vacuum Pump
Stewart EMP Inline 55 GPM Elec. Water Pump
Howe Racing Rad.
Custom ITB setup using Triumph t595 throttles fitted with ford Duratec injectors
oiling passages radiused, opened up, block notched, etc..
Heavily ported/flowed heads
Interprep Tuning Springs
Chromoly Retainers
Ferrea Valves
Custom Welded 250/250 @ .050" duration cams
Solid Lifter conversion to lightweight shim under bucket lifter
Direct Port 175 nitrous
Megasquirt 3 v3.0/MS3x (sequential injection, progressive nitrous, coil on plug, etc..)
Manual Steering Rack
No a/c

Going in a super rare color, low mile '95 Probe GT (I know lame) that will be my weekend car (will be n/a almost always with the bottle just for making nicer numbers). Probably looking at spinning ~9-10k rpm to accomplish this based on the other (2) people who have done this.

Car has had a good chunk of weight pulled out of it, but still retains a full interior, goal is to see it well under 2600lbs with me in it.

Hopefully will be fun once it is done. All parts are here minus a couple valvetrain parts, heads are done and assembled for the most part. The bottom end should be together in the next couple months.

No. The previous engine was a rebuilt klze. This is a stock (klde) motor that I am building. Essentially once you remove the pistons from the ZE block you have removed the only difference between the stock short block and the ze short block. This build really is a hodge-podge of aftermarket pieces from various Mazdas..but it is what you have to do with a platform that has no aftermarket support.

Mazda Miata aftermarket lifters
Mazda 323 Steering Rack
Mazda B-series outer tie rods/ends
1st gen probe clutch mater cyl.
Triumph throttles
Ford Duratec Injectors
Mazda 626 cam cores
Mazda 626 cam sensor/cam gear
Millenia S Brake Calipers
3000gt Vr4 front rotors
etc..

I noticed that I left out the details about the trans/suspension also. The trans build is as follows..

PAR 2nd/3rd/4th gearsets
double synchros
billet cups
MFactory LSD
MFactory Custom final
Custom Mazda Mx-3 lower trans mount
(Car has AWR solid poly front, rear, passenger mounts)

Hopefully the axial gears and the billet cups really help with the case cracking, as these transmissions are not very strong.

Sounds like a cool little hot rod.

So you are staying with the 2.5L block? I think I read somewhere you can use the 3.0L block from the taurus, but I dont know if that would rev high enough.

Cool! Those cars have great potential, and a built one is definitely not something you see everyday.

Good luck, and post a vid when you are done, the KL motors are some of the best sounding v6's.

I am staying with a stock block 2.5. Just a .020" overbore. The 3.0l motor in the Taurus is either the Vulcan or the Duratec. Neither are compatible with the KL motors. I think you are thinking of the guys that swap the 2.5l duratec for the 3.0l bottom end in Contours and such.

This is the first high rpm big power n/a build in a KL powered street car. The other two are race only applications. I will be sure to post pics and vids as I go. And I completely agree on the sound. It is a great sounding short stroke motor, and they love to rev..if only the factory oiling loved to rev too it would be a lot easier! lol.

Not at the moment. I am pretty busy with work. The car needs to have the rear head put back on it so that I can get the coil-on-plug conversion installed and fired up with the Megasquirt 3/ MS3x. Then the car goes off for the oil pump mount/belt alignment for tte pump.

The electric water pump setup is in and done, along with the larger/thicker radiator. I also picked up my Autopower Race bar (4 pt.) that I need to weld in.

Lovin' all the pics in here.
Way back when, my brother had a '96(?) GT that we half-heartedly turbo'd. Was fun when it ran right. Good luck!

Man that's a wild build. Most people just put some boost to the kl and that's it. Easy 250-300whp on very low boost. I love what you done with the motor. Never seen anyone go the route your taking.
What crank are you using kl or klg4. and whats your goal for the motor. Should be able to rev 9000-10000rpm with your setup.

Yeah..with all of the eBay kits out there I wanted to do something that is different. I have always been more interested in n/a build for small engines and this kind of build has not been done in a streetable application before. Hopefully the car will see 275+ n/a, but we shall see. The two race applications made 273 and 291whp and I have been talking a lot with them about what they would have done differently and such. I am trying to cover all of my bases and make improvements which the others have left out/skipped. I don't want to get my hopes up though.

I am using a 96-97 KLDE crank. They are a couple pounds lighter than the 93-95 crank, but are still forged steel. The KLg4 crank may/may not be forged even though it is a couple pounds lighter than the one I am using. With all of the weight out of the valvetrain and rotating assembly already, I am not concerned with the lighter klg4 crank..I would rather have a for sure forged crank. I should be seeing 9500+ rpm out of this motor to see the power numbers that I want..based on what the other two cars are spinning to and where they are making their power...but again, we shall see.

Goals are:

275+ n/a
450+ on a 150/175 shot.
In a ~2500lb car with a full interior/radio

I think your goals are realistic. Plus you will have the reliability to go along with it. Unlike most boosted Probe. Stronger internals and quality parts. What about bearings. ACL H bearing?.

Only thing I would be concerned with is the transmission with the 175 shot. but they are easy to find and easy to change, I think Mazda saw this coming.
That external oil pump is very interesting.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks!

Actually they are special order Clevite .040 oversized 302 race bearings. ACL was the other that I looked at but I was having issues getting them in the size I needed.

Transmission has two major issues that cause them to fail. The flex of the shafts causing a partial engagement of 3rd gear which shears the teeth off of them. And the stretching of the cases from the helical cut of the gears.

I think that the use of axial cut gears will alleviate the case stretching and help with the flex of the shafts. The billet cups and heavy duty I/O shafts should also significantly help with the case stretching and shaft flex.

The custom lower trans mount, traction bars, and solid mounts on all sides should also help. There is really not much more I can do, lol. I think this combination will give me a pretty good shot at keeping the trans together...and with some nice meaty sidewall tires/LSD help me put it to the ground as much as I can.

The oil pump is really the only shot I have at spinning that kind of rpm. I lost a 12k mile motor spinning it to only ~8k regularly when the pump failed (a brand new Mazda pump). I figure even spinning the oil pump I will still come out way ahead as far as parasitic loss from my accessories..since I don't have to spin the water pump or PS pump anymore..

How exactly are you pluming the oil pump to the engine and what do you do with the oil pump on the crank. May have to try this.

Nice! I have seen pictures of the 1g before. Are you on PT or mx6.com? Is the third one a Sierra Mist '95?

The details on the crank setup for the drive gear are not ironed out yet, it is going to depend on how the guy wants to do it to makes sure everything lines up. There are a couple options out there, but I have not decided what road I am going to take.

Yes I'm a member of both. Sometimes it helps to look at what the domestic guys do regarding this. One of the guys I guys I work with does circle track racing and I learn a lot from him and get a lot of ideas that I can use on my car. If you get a chance, go over to mx6.com and vote for my car for ride of the month. Thanks

Done.

So you ARE garfield! I met you at Flyrtle last year. I came down with Jarod (the guy who was helping Jordan tune most of the day).

So you own a Sierra Mist Blue '95 PGT also?
