d16y8 head on d16z6 block need help!!
Ok so I'm putting a d16y8 head on my d16z6 block. I have read on all different sites and forums and keep getting mix matched answers! I'm looking for timing help! So I've read in alot of posts that i can use the z6 gear and y8 gear and then I've read I can't use either. So I decided to just buy an adjustable cam gear and go from there. Now my question is where to set the gear to time it right? I've heard 4.5 degrees advanced and retard? So I'm getting really confused at this point as to where I'm supposed to set the cam gear and everything to time this damn thing! I have a 95 civic ex stock p28. I'm using a d15b7 dizzy got it all done up but am at a standstill till I figure out what I really need to set the adjustable cam gear at for timing? If it helps I bought the vms adjustable gear from ebay that says it's for the z6 and y8 motor. I really need help in this situation and any help is appreciated alot!

Can't you troubleshoot a lot of this yourself? Sorry as I don't have an immediate answer for you, I haven't done this head swap before - but if it were me, I would set the cam gear to zero - try one of the belts lining up the marks as best you can, and seeing how close you are. Slowly turning it over by hand and ensuring it's not binding on anything... You can put long screwdrivers in each spark plug hole and take off the distributor cap so when you turn it over by hand you can see when the spark is firing in relation to the piston position.
Also you might want to look up a diagram of the timing gear side of each engine and comparing them yourself. You'll have a deeper understanding of your issue, and when you go to fire it up you'll be more confident if you solve this riddle yourself.
Just my 2 cents! Good luck!
