Hey guys i have a 99 prelude base and im going to change the exhaust, an i wanted to know what is the best catalytic converter to use. I dont think i want a test pipe cuz im not racing this car and i would need to pass inspection. But i want something better than the stock converter.

car sound (magnaflow) should be fine and are under $100; that's what i'm planning to use in a couple months when i redo my exhaust. make sure it has an o2 bung since your obd2.

Nice choice. :-)

OP, if you're staying with the stock size, here's what you want:

If you're bumping it up to a 2.5" exhaust, here's what you want:

Or quite possibly this, praying the link works.

http://www.easterncatalytic.com/products/directfit.php

There like $120-$130 I think, they're direct fit though!

Made by Eastern Catalytic

Plus they're bolt on not weld flanges at a shop. Save you money, take 5 minutes to swap them out once you snap your rusted bolts

Both SMSP and Hytech sell excellent catalytic converters:

i've been using a magnaflow but i think if i were to do it again (and not have gotten the sweet deal on the magnaflow) i would go with an SMSP cat.

test pipes are dumb for street cars pretty much unless you are turbo.

I agree totally, you should see the back of my garage door when I didn't have a cat on. Plus the stank the comes out of the exhaust with no cat is horrible

Can't beat an OEM catalytic converter IMO, as far as smog reduction goes.

Keep in mind, sometimes it's cheaper to have an O2 bung put in at the muffler shop than buying a cat with an O2 bung already in it.

Will using the 2.5" cat still allow me to pass smog? I currently have a carsound 2.25" hfc on my 5th gen right now, but I got it 2 yrs ago and I am assuming that I need a new one.

regardless of what cat you buy make sure it is OBDII compliant. They usually have a higher cell count than the OBDI.
