well, generally it means that the caps buttone is hit TWICE. Once to turn it on, the other to turn it OFF.

But on a car, it's simply an unnecessary practice of pushing the clutch in and out twice to help the synchros out. If you drive a tractor trailer, then you need it, if you don't drive one of those, then don't worry about it.

Why would some one double clutch? To help synchros out? Like matching RPM?

actually, it's for trannies without synchronised gears... i.e. dog gears.

all hondas have synchronised gearing, so no need for double clutching. double clutching is to use the clutch twice in the aid to rev/speed match the next lower gear while downshifting to prevent damage to dog gears. another variant, called "heel-toe" shifting is used to also rev/speed match the gears while downshifting to provide smooter downshifts and is a technique used with synchro and dog trannies. you never double clutch on an upshift...

As some trans don't have sync for reverse it may help to stop that crunching sound when trying to jam it into reverse gear on some motors, apart from that it is only of any use on farming equipment or when driving some old classics.

Double clutching is very smart. When you double clutch it gets your tranny spinning and engages better, faster.

When you are in first gear (example) then you put in clutch, put it in second gear and press gas at the same second as you are releasing your clutch from engaged position. Thats double clutching.

I mostly double clutch when down-shifting though corners, but if I am going fast then I rev match. Rev matching is safest of all. Doesn't wear brakes or clutch. Only problem it does put a little strain on tranny. Hope this helps clear a few things up!?

actually, it puts a lot LESS strain on the tranny as compared to jammin and droppin (granny shifting)

Damn, not everyone rev-matches? That's crazy. Sure synchros are nice, but I never use 'em.

My 3rd gear sychro is screwed so I HAVE to double clutch or the gear grinds.

Speaking of trannies, anyone have an idea on how much a used civic EX manual tranny would cost? Yeah, I know, I'm in the prelude forum and not the civic forum, but almost nobody answers questions over there...

thats completely false. dont spread incorrect information until research is done.

as for the original poster, a search engine is your friend.

am I correct that double clutching is letting the clutch out in neutral between each gear?

Oh man...
prsi -- you've described how to shift gears...that is, press clutch in, change gears while clutch is in, and let clutch pedal out as you press gas. Where is the "double" clutch in that?

Double clutching from, say, 3rd to 2nd gear goes as follows: You are in 3rd gear. Release gas as you press clutch in. Shift to neutral. Let clutch out (the "first" clutch). Blip gas to bring revs up (becasue you're downshifting). Press clutch in. Shift to second gear. Let clutch pedal out as you press gas (the "second" clutch).

You can combine this with "heel-toe"ing, although the term is a bit misnamed. In most Hondas, you can "heel-toe" by using the ball or slightly left of the ball of your right foot on the brake pedal and the right edge of your right foot for the gas pedal.
As you're coming to a turn, you brake with the left part of your right foot while pressing the clutch in. While the clutch is in, you blip the throttle with the right part of your right foot to bring the revs up while you shift into the desired (usually lower) gear. Release clutch and brake while adding gas. Usually you want to be done braking before you start turning (of course there are exceptions but doing all the braking before the turn allows the car to be more stable through the turn since you are gassing through it).

Now, when you've practiced double clutching and "heel-toe"ing enough, you can combine the two to take turns.

Don't be so defensive, prsi. Double clutching is the way All Natural explained it, using to the clutch twice, dropping it between the shift to spin everything up. What you're describing is rev matching.

Myself; I find that with my new Motec exhaust I need to double clutch or else I get a:

and I hate when that happens.

You shouldn't be doing anything through corners except some sort of throttle. Down shifting is done before the corner, not in it.

Ok, I need to learn to explain my self better...

When you double clutch, it DOES not take you more than 1 second, well, at least for me. I was trying to explain it to him so he understood (starter of the post). I didn't explain well enough that during the process of shifting gears, while sliding in neutral the clutch is in engaged position, then in gear, the clutch dropped... Of course then gas is pressed. I double clutch though corners, when not driving fast, it saves brakes. Maybe you don't do it, but I do. I always rev-match when down-shifting coming down a hill towards a stop sign. Agian, saves brakes. I'm just trying to help him understand.

What the heck are you taken' about? Double clutching has absolutely nothing to do with the brakes. You mean you downshift and engine brake when coming to a stop or slowing down for corners.

Dirtylude- I, too, have that problem with my motec. I also learned some tricks from the movie, and now I double-clutch everytime when drag racing!

prsi- you are better using your brakes to slow down, not your transmission. Pads are much cheaper.

Man, you are all f*ckers... j/k

DirtyLude: You need to LISTEN, when in gear, you don't need to use brakes as much because in gear slows you down. Ah, now you get it. If you had any knowledge what so ever you would understand this. Of course double clutching has nothing to do with braking. You are a quick thinker, wait, no, you're not!

I know exactly what double clutching is, I agree, I explained it poorly. But then people jumped on the bandwagon to try to sound smart, while disagreeing with me. I noticed, almost all who said I was wrong, in NO way tried to explain why I was wrong, or what exactly double clutching is...

I am now taking time out of my day to explain double clutch properly... Here goes:

Lets say you are in 3rd, shift into 2nd, now view your rpms and speed at this moment. At this speed, the difference won't be very much - maybe only a few hundred rpm(s). Go back into 3rd gear. This time put the clutch in, push gear to neutral and let the clutch back out. You are now coasting with the clutch out. Raise the engine speed to where it will be in third gear. Quickly push the clutch in, select 2nd gear, and let the clutch out. There should be no jump/lurch if you matched revs right. Then if you want to accelerate, go for it. Earlier I kindof indicated that you need the gas to double clutch, I didn't mean to say that. What I was trying to say is to accelerate after, from when you switched gears. I now understand why everyone got confused.

This is double clutching, please read, don't jump on a bandwagon and try to put me down in some way... Thanks...

Read my above comments. You dont use your transmission to slow you down! You do, however, use it to maximize acceleration out of cornering or braking, but this is a completely different thing than what you explain.

Ah, now you get it. If you had any knowledge what so ever you would understand this. Of course double clutching has nothing to do with braking. You are a quick thinker, wait, no, you're not!
Now you're making yourself look like more of an *** than you already do.

Not jumping on any bandwagon, just clearing things up a bit.
