Throwing CEL at 3k rpm while driving at 60mph
Recently the check engine light has been coming on almost every time when im cruising at 3k rpm anywhere between 40mph and 60mph on the freeway. It then goes away when I turn the car off. Any ideas before I go get it checked out???

i was thinking knock sensor, because way back when i used to use one, this problem happened. As long as I stayed below 3k, no CEL. The second i went about 3k, i would get a Knock sensor CEL.

yes, when you get a knock sensor cel the ecu retards the timing and makes the car a pain to drive.

i have a similar problem... mine only happens when the temp gauges hits 1/2 way almost as soon as the gauge hits 1/2 on the temp the cel comes on... no power lose or anything... strange problem

Sounds like possibly EGR. Only comes on during cruising from 2700-3500 rpms in my experience and when car was warmed up. Get the code though to know for sure.

yeah, I keep getting a code 7 for throttle position sensor and it usually only comes on when i'm getting on it at about 50-60 in 3rd. sometimes it doesn't effect me but sometimes it makes my car go nuts and jerk randomly.

That sound about right...if its that what does the EGR do and why does it cause the check engine light to come on???

Car is a 93 so im OBDI
Can i just go to any mechanic and have them read the code???
The code also disappears when I turn off the car so i guess I have to drive around until it trows a CEL again.

your ecu will most likely be storing the code. search for hwo to read a CEL on here and it'll take you 2 minutes with a paperclip. not worth paying to have a mechanic read it and charge you

Re: (shutta)
Yeah I know the paper clip trick...I was just under the impression that you couldnt check the code once its gone and that you can only do it when you start your car. I guess Ill try it when I get home. thanks

yeah, just pop it in there and turn the key forward. My 4ws stores codes and even when the 4ws hasn't been on for weeks, and i check a CEL, it shows me stored 4ws codes also
