Default SFC-VTEC doubts

well, i have no doubt that my fields SFC-VTEC controller is working in terms of the vtec control part..... but i'm doubting my SFC feature. I have a narrow-band A/F guage so i've been trying to tune off that... but when i lean out the entire curve by say 5%, i don't see a difference in the a/f.
Also went i had a turbo setup on the car before, at Importbuilders when they tried to lean it out, they said that it didn't matter if they set it to -30% or +30%, and that the wideband A/F was reading it as the same everytime. They also told me that they've tried tuning using the SFC-VTEC over like 100 times and that it never works......
Those with the fields controller, do you have the same problem? could it be that there's a mis-spliced wire? I know that VAFCs work no problem but i don't want to buy another controller

Your narrowband O2 meter is not going to be accurate enough to gauge the A/F ratio changes. It should be able to be seen with the wideband O2 on a dyno though. FWIW, I've never heard of anyone having problems tuning A/F with the Field AFC. I've known several people that have had them installed on Preludes...

i never actually use mine because it's not tuned. but you can tell a difference with the fuel settings.

for instance there will be less build-up on the muffler tip after leaning out the mixture since all h22a ecu's run rich.

i've also ridden in two civic turbo running the field's and they worked fine.

hmmm alright.... thanks a lot for the replies.... i'll check to see if everything is hooked up right..... a narrowband A/F just reads a more narrow range of voltage right? if this is the case, its still right in terms of being lean or being rich..... its just that it doesn't tell me how far i'm off....

three comments about the SFC

1) as said in a couple of other places, OBDII is going to negate any changes you make to the fuel settings. Of course this takes time, but it eventually well. Therefore, the feature is pretty worthless if you leave the SFC on all the time.

2) it does actually work. if you increase the fuel about 5% in the highest part of the band... you'll redline farther than you have ever before . This is not reccomended, but at least you can see the effects

3) SFC is the worst vtec controller out there. They go bad consistently. There's a very good reasons why they use to retail for close to $300, and now can be ebayed for less than $100. an ITR also reported having to replace his ecu because of an malfunction related to the SFC. I personally had to remove my SFC because it kicked the bucket after 3 years. Map sensors were going haywire. I was idling at 200-300.

my advice, look into the apex version... or look into hondadata for something a little more serious.

best of luck

why would your map go crazy? the sfc is a piggy back controller that you can even just turn off.....

yeah of course on a hondata would be ideal, but its also money =P

yeah i'm looking into the NTPOG mod where it turns off your ecu everytime you turn off your car

Even turning it off, the car idle way to low. We went thru a systematic way of figuring everything out...tested wires, changed plugs, etc, etc.

Once we removed the SFC, car idled normally. We even tried to just leave the vtec feature on, and only remove the connections to the ecu involving fuel adjustments... no go, had to remove the whole unit to get the car back to normal idle.

I'm not mechanic, just an enthusiast at best. So I wouldn't know the thoery behind the map going crazy. All I know is that when we plugged in the Honda OBD computer, it reported codes for errors in the Map Sensor.

just to reiterate, my sfc expereince is not isolated... if you look around, ask shops, ask ppl... you'll soon see how many people have had to remove the unit in due time.

But don't be to worried... you won't be stranded or anything if it does come to this... the idle is just bad... and it was very hard to get up to 3000 rpm.
