Random smoke issue ....(H23)
My H23 has about 150k on it and ive noticed that every so often I will start it and it will puff out a short burst of blue smoke...My first thought was the valve seals are getting worn but im not positive because it only does it like once a month or so .......the last time it did it was back in november and today it did it after sitting at my office for 2-3 days....
On a side note : Ive noticed that my PCV has oil all in it when i take it out of the valve cover , and the hose has alot of oil in it as well...
I appreciate any advice or ideas before i replace the valve seals

well blue smoke means you are burning oil but i cant exactly say where it is. as for the pcv valve i suggest you check to see if its good or you might start having oil leaks if it is damaged.

Yeah your burning oil!
What you can do is a leak down test to see if your rings are good.
Also Installing an Oil catch can on the PVC will stop the oil from flowing into the IM

I have the same problem as you do, with 180,000 on my H22. I'm almost positive that its the valve seals. My guess is that if the motor stops at only one specific point it will cause it to leak, and then burn oil. Its only happend to me every 3 or 4 months, and its only after the car has set overnight. I just consider it cylinder conditioning, and go on about things. If you find out what it is let me know.

Honda, shame on those engineers. They should have stuck to driving their trains*.
Hey, I'll go gunk up my intake, pretty much with oil (not exactly but I feel the need to exagerate) so pressure can be vented out of my crankcase.
Why the hell would they vent it right into the intake?! Thats soo beyond dumb it baffles me to retardation (beyond what I could already be considered lol)
All they need is a specific vacuum (at minimum, more vacuum I'm understanding would be benificial.) to be drawn out of the crankcase to vent right? The exhaust after the cat would probably work wouldn't it? I'm sure this is covered in here some where in H-T anyway, but either way, I wish I understood so it wouldn't hurt my brain so much to compriehend what they were thinking.

I think they were thinking send it through the engine to burn as much of it as possible. If I were you I wouldn't worry too much about. I'm pretty sure most cars have the same type of system.

Emission codes.
The U.S has specific requirements for imported/domestic vehicles when it pertains to emissions.....It's the law.
It's not necessarily going to be the smartest way, they (auto. industry) have strict guidelines to follow, when marketing their products, especially import vehicles.
The Japs are notorious for our, and their, advancement toward technology. I'm sure they have thought about this specific issue in automotive engineering, way before the word Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. was even introduced to us here in the U.S.
Same scenario applies to building codes when building a new home.
Although for 60+ years a 2 x 4 will hold up the same load baring wall standing 8'/10', tall.
Your building code specifically, may state to use a 2 x 6. depending on the city, county, state, and their requirements, you still have guidelines to follow.
Like I said, it may not be the smartest way, but you have to comply with the regulations........You have no choice, if you want to build a home, or for this matter build an engine. Somebody somewhere has a reason......or they think they do. lol.

P.S.
If your still a little baffled by the Japs. engineering, take a look around your own home as you read this, and think of how many products you have, such as your cell phone, microwave, television, washer/dryer, vacuum, Ipod, Xbox, etc. and the parts/peices and what country they were made in.
I'm sure that Japan plays a huge role in comfort and engineering.....Especially the computer your typing on.
I've never heard of a "may tag" computer......
A little "Train" for thought.

fossil fuels are more harmful to the atmosphere when they are unburned. Routing the oil fumes into the intake burns as much of them as possible.
strictly for emissions reasons. Otherwise everything would just come with a breather or catch can. Thank your government, not Honda.

Thanx for the replies... I normally wouldnt worry about something that only happened once every 2-3 months but its kinda embarrassing to fire up your car and have smoke come blowing out.... if it was the valve seals I would think that it would do it on most start ups....Ive had my brother stand behind my car for the last week when I start it and he said there is nothing coming out....and it never smokes while driving either... so strange....I might do a compression and leak down test next weekend and see what that reveals....
anybody else with this problem feel free to chime in...

You might try *gasp* Lucas Oil Stabilizer. I've had good luck in the past with that(ask about details). I wouldn't use it for more then a thousand miles. Its really thick, and caused some foam in my oil. Maybe throw it in as a refill if your car uses oil as much as mine does.

Re: Random smoke issue ....(H23) (M@)
Sounds like carbon build up. Idk.
Also try "Sea foam" through the main vacuum line in the tb.
Clean your egrv, iacv, and possibly your fitv........
How's the idle? Any problems?

Yeah Im pretty sure its blueish smoke...Ive been watching it ever since I posted this like 2 weeks ago maybe and it hasnt done it since...I am going to do a compression test and a leakdown test this weekend ...hopefully its the valve seals , cause Ive changed them out before and its not to bad...
Thanx for all of the replies
