It just cranks?? It could be that the spark plugs are flooded. Try taking them out and cranking the motor over a few times. Should discharge the fuel in the cylinder, then burn the tips of the spark plug and wipe them clean...

When was the last time it started? Was it running okay when it was running? I know you said you have fuel but it could be residual or just not getting enough. If you haven't yet, I would check the pump just to make sure it's operating correctly.

Mine has sputtered and died a couple of times at start up. (also 97) And it takes a while to start when my fuel gets below a half of tank. I'm interested in what you find. Keep us posted.

With just one cylinder showing low compression I would still expect the car to start. It may be a little rough but it should still start.

check your firing order and make sure your wires are lined up correctly i had the same problem and then i checked the wires and sure enough one of them was off.
