car is overheating at idle...fans not coming on
whenever my car idles for a while, it will begin to over heat. When i start to move it goes back down. I have began noticing that my fan is not coming on. I have checked the relay and it is fine. What else can i check?

Mine did that once and it was the plug that is right at the thermostat housing. It wasn't making a good connection. Check that. it's prolly the problem.

Re: car is overheating at idle...fans not coming on (Sephro)
anytime it overheats, can i turn on my a/c and let it cool off. will the compressor fan still run? My compressor is not hooked up because it went bad, so i unhooked the compressor. But if i hit the a/c button, will that only turn on the fan? That is sort of confusing, but hopefully someone can understand that.
Any have a GOOD a/c compressor that they would like to get rid of?

No you don't want to hit the A/C when it's overheating. You need to turn the heater on (all the way). If your fan is not turning on, check the fuse and the temperature sensor(located on the thermostat housing)....it's most likely the sensor...

In this case the AC might actually help as it will turn on the AC fan contrasts to no fan at all at idle.
But I'd check the fan switch to see if it's working or not and to ensure that you don't have a break anywhere in your connections along the line to the rad fans.

definately check the thermostat and the temp sensor on the thermostat housing. If the sensor is bad, the fans wont turn on b/c they dont get the warning that its too hot. Your car begins to cool when you start driving b/c you start blowing lots of air over the radiator, so it cools the coolant down. Definately check that sensor and if its bad, you should be able to use one off any honda engine, but make sure of that first. If you need it, i have an ac compressor and a temp sensor. Im not completely sure the compressor is good though, it came off my swap, so i never have used it, but the company that sold me the motor says it should work....let me know...

i have another sensor out of an h23 intake manifold i have sitting around. IF that sensor were to go bad, wouldnt it throw any sort of code?

ok, if it is the sensor located in the thermostat housing, wouldnt my car always read as being cold? Would it not have a reading of the temp at all or is that the temp sensor that controls when the fans come on?

Is the fuse for the Fan in the fuse box inside the car or some place other. What will it be called on the fuse box if so? I have h23a 92 prelude si.

Ever wonder why it is on a hot day that people tell you your "fan is still running" as you walk away from your car? Did it ever occur to you that the engine temperature sensor (and it's gauge) might be a different control component than the temperature "switch" that turns on your main cooling fan?
Here is what you have. The main cooling fan is directly connected to a live battery connection at all times and is controlled by a temperature switch located within the radiator. This switch simply "closes" on rising temperature and "opens" on falling temperature. You cannot remotely turn on or turn off the main fan and it is independent of the ignition key switch. This system is in your car so that you won't warp that precious aluminum engine block of yours and come back to Honda looking for a warranty replacement motor.
Locate the temp switch for the main fan and pull off the connector. "jumper" the connector and see if the fan comes on. If the fan comes on replace the temp switch. If the fan doesn't come on check for power at the connector ( to gnd). If you have power at the connector than replace the fan.
Don't mess with an overheating problem! It only takes a few minutes of driving to damage an overheated ALUMINUM engine beyond repair. Imagine how much it would cost to replace a motor instead of a faulty temperature switch.

you can wire a switch to the fan so when you're at idle you can flip the switch to turn on the fan....
dumb question....have you replaced your thermostat? also check the ECT sensor....

no.the thermostat would cause your car to either overheat or run cool..check your ECT sensors and fan relays

i just wired my temp sensor wires together. now my fan comes on with the key. that way at the strip i can make the fans be on, but the engine off.
