98 Lude - Shifter Problem?
Hi folks...a buddy of mine has a 98 'lude (5spd) and lately he's been having some trouble. In particular, when he downshifts, he says the shifter feels really hard and he can feel it shuddering... any guesses on what could cause this?
Thanks!

shift cable eh? How would you test for that...? Also, could it be something else - low tranny fluid, clogged filter, etc.?

yes, it could be sychros or a small list of other things. with my experience, the shift cables are a common problem. disconnect the cable from the tranny and see how easy it is to slide the cable on its own. if it's still hard to move, thats your prob. if it slides easily, try to move the lever on the tranny by hand. if the lever is the problem, something in your tranny is messed up.

Ok! That sounds great...one question though...once I disconnect and then reconnect the cable, do I need to do anything special to align the cable, etc? Or does it simply pop into place? Sorry, haven't done anything on Hondas before except basic - oil change/rotors, etc!
Thanks again

just pop it back on. once you get used to working on your car, you'll realize that hondas might as well be made of legos.
