Default Axle issues...acceleration vibrations...need some help.

For those who might not know, I have an 3rd gen w/ an H22 swap using Place Racings mount kit and axles...

So, my inner driver side joint was bad (could move it around by hand) so I went and got a Prelude axle and swapped the inner joint on to my place racing axles. All felt well (no movement like before) but now it has a very distinct vibration on hard acceleration (worse than before).

The axle itself seems fine (no play), so I'm thinking maybe it's binding (too long?). I put the suspension back together and remembered Place Racings instructions (BELOW) on checking axle fitment and they said that you should only have between 1/4" and 1" of free-play. Mine wouldn't hardly move in so that's why I thing it's too long.

My first step tonight will be to compare the casings of the inner joints (the old vs new) to see if maybe my new one is a bit longer to cause this.

Another thing I might look at is the play on the other side. If I have at least 1/2" plus of extra play, maybe the engine can be shifted towards the pass side to help.

Here's the freeplay instructions from Place Racing:

Congratulations, on your axle purchase! In spite of what the box says, these axle combinations are Brand new, not Remanufactured. They are specially constructed using a brand new shaft and brand new inner and outer C.V. joints. These axles are built to STOCK specifications. They are as strong as stock axles, and will work with transplants that are basically unmodified or with slightly modified engines. They are not intended for drag racing use. These axles have been specially sized for each individual engine and chassis combination, but you should Check Your Axle Free-Play before final installation!!! Failure to do so may result in a prematurely broken or damaged axle.

One Time FREE Replacement is Available
Since there are quite a few variations between every vehicle, we offer a ONE TIME free replacement service. It is our desire that your transplant is conducted successfully, and that you are completely satisfied with our products, so axles that are not properly sized will be replaced free of charge under a one time replacement program provided that the following conditions are met:
1. The original axle must be returned to us and must be in brand new, unused condition. This is extremely important!! If you decide to run an axle that is too short or too long, even for just one or two miles, the tranmission and hub seals will permanently leave a polished ring on each of teh sealing surfaces. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT an axle that has been run or damaged in any way.
2. We must have an accurate measurement of the free play or travel as described below. This is a one time replacement only, so be very careful to provide us with an accurate meansurement.
3. Shipping costs are not covered under this program.
4. You must obtain an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number before sending an axle back. We will record your exact dimentions at that time so be sure to have this ready. Again, be accurate, you only get one chance. An axle that has to be shortened or lengthened again will be suject to a $100 charge.
5. Any axle that has been returned borken, used, or damaged in any way, will not be covered under this one time replacement program. A broken or damaged axle will be covered under warranty however and will be repaired free of charge, but any lengthening or shortenging if required, will not be covered. The cost to lengthen or shorten an axle is $100. Shipping costs are not covered.

General Warranty Information
All axles are covered by an Unconditional ONE (1) Year Warranty by the manufacturer. By special arrangement with us, they will repair or replace any axle that failed for any reason. Proof of purchase may be required so keep all your receipts. Shipped costs are not covered. Axle lengthening or shortening is not covered under warranty.

Testing and measuring the Axle Free Play.
The axle free play is a measurement of the TOTAL distance the axle can be moved in and out of the hub when it is fully installed on the vehicle, but before the large axle is tightened down. The axle must have enough free play so that the suspension can travel and down without bottomming the axle out. Your measurement must be accurate to the nearest 1/8" so use a measureing tape or ruler placed along the threaded part of the shaft and the face of the hub. Do not guess. In the examples below, you can see that from the fully extended position in Step 1, the axle traveled approximately 3/4" to end up at step 2. This axle is within the allowable tolerance for free play. The threaded part of the axle should still extend out from the face of the hub. In Step 3, however, the axle traveled almost 1 1/2" from the fully extended position in Step 1. This axle is too short. The threaded part of the shaft actually entered into the hub. This axle is not acceptable and is elegible for replacement under the one time replacement program. If, upon installation, you are not able to push the axle at least 1/4 inward from the fully extended position, then this axle is too long, and is also eligible for replacement.

STEP ONE:
Install the axle completely into trans and hub. Connect the lower control arm to the lower ball joint but do not tighten the castle nut yet. Insert the axle fully into the hub, but do not screw on the axle nut. Measure how far out the axle extends from the iner face of the hub. (The inner face of the hub is the area where the axle nut would contact the hub if it was screwed down)

STEP TWO:
Press the axles in as far as you can and note how far the axle travels from the fully extended position to the fully compressed position. The MINIMUM amount of travel from the fully extended position is 1/4" in, and the MAXIMUM amount of travel is 1". In this photo the axle was pressed in approximately 3/4" and still extends out 1/4" from the inner face of the hub. This axle is sized properly, and no adjustments are required.

STEP THREE:
In this photo the axle has traveled about 1 1/4" and has gone beyond the inner face of the hub. If the axle travels farther than 1" from the fully extended position, or you are not able to move the axle at all...STOP...Do not use this axle, it is too short or too long respectively. You may have the wrong configuration or you may be using the wrong stationary halfshaft on the engine block. Contact us immediately for help troubleshooting the problem. If it appears that the ezle is sized wrong for your application we will offer a free replacement.
I think I had about 1/32" of travel! lol

I'll have to pull off the axle nut on the pass side to see if maybe there is too much (or at least 1/4") of travel that could be passed to the drivers side.

But do you guys think that an axle that is too long would create vibrations this way?

I don't know for sure what I did exactly that helped it but after working with it tonight (trying to increase the free play), it does not vibrate any more. The lude has never been this smooth before! lol Feels nice!

What I did was undo the lower ball joint, lower shock fork and axle nut. I then popped it out and worked the axle in and out (felt a bit stiff). Then popped it back in the hub and played with the free play some (push/pulling on the axle and using a hammer some...not too hard though!). I got it to go almost a full 1/4" of free play. I then put it back together and took her out for a ride w/ success.
