AHH!! Axle nut drivin me nuts! HELP!
well guys, it's that time where I have to replace my CV boots. Anyways, I can't get the freakin axle nut off! I'm using a 2ft breaker bar and jumping on that thing and it's still not budging! What are my options here? And how the heck do I seperate the axle from the intermediate shaft? It says in my HELMS to hit it until it comes off but it's not budging at all. I probably spent 1 hr trying to budge the axle from the intermediate shaft with no luck so far. Let me know guys! thanks.
One more thing, if you have both driver and passenger side axles for sale for a 4th gen manual tranny, let me know. I think the driver side is going bad so might as well replace both sides. thanks!

Take off the center cap, use a 36mm socket, drop the car on all four wheels, have someone press on the brakes then try and loosen it. Make sure the indented locking part of the axle nut is also pryed out as well.
Put some muscle into it and it'll loosen.

I'll try it again with the car on the ground. Man this thing is tough! I'm 5'8 200lbs(muscles of course ) and I was jumping on the breaker bar and still wouldn't budge. My brother tried taking his off his civic and he bent 2 craftsman ratchets. I pulled the locking tab out, sprayed it with WD-40, the whole works and it wouldn't budge.
By the way, ANYBODY out there selling driver side and passenger side axles for a manual tranny 4th gen prelude? Man, I don't want to go through this again. thanks.

haha...it's cool...yeah I'm turning it the right way, towards the front of the car or basically lefty loosey righty tighty. That's how I remember it. My friend might have a impact gun. Is it that much easier? Also, does anybody know how to seperate the axle from the intermediate shaft?

Re: (91_hatch_si)
those nuts are tightened to 181 ft/lbs IIRC... atleast the 97 rear nuts are. MAKE SURE you tap that nut back out, or you won't be going anywhere. Also try some PB Blaster to work it loose, and another suggestion is try to tighten it JUST ENOUGH to brake it loose... sounds like a dumb idea but trust me, it really does work. You just tighten it ever so slightly and it brakes the nut loose and it's alot easier to take off. Just don't do the "tightening" with an impact gun.
That or you could take a peice of pipe and extend your braker bar

FREAKIN A MAN! well I just broke a 12-inch breaker bar and a ratchet trying to get this axle nut off. We were using a 30-inch extention and the breaker bar and ratchet couldn't handle it. I sprayed it crazy with some WD-40 and that thing won't budge. Any other ideas?

Re: (CHK4TIX)
buy a snap-on breaker bar(haven't broken one yet, if I do, I get 2), and a 3-5ft piece of lead pipe, i personally slam a good flat blade in the brake slot, and give the bitch hell. And to get the axle separated from the intermediate shaft, I recommend the Craftsman 3lb l-f-hammer. Works wonders all over a honda.

HEAT! Heat solves everything, makes things soft and also expands the metal so its not gripping so tight on the thread. Go buy a propane torch for 20 bucks.

Re: (TraKtioN)
where can I get a snap-on breaker bar? Everywhere I've been so far I haven't seen anybody selling snap-on tools. Also, what's a l-f-hammer? never heard of it? Will a rubber mallat work on it?

Re: (Honda Sport)
listen,
just put a 36mm impact socket on it attached to a 2ft breaker bar.
take a sledge hammer and slam the bar a few times and it will pop the nut free.
works every time.

lfh is Little Fu#*n hammer and BFH Is big F-ing hammer. I have had to use a 1/2" or 3/4" drive, breaker bar and 3-4 foot pipe in the past or a impact. Impact does wonders if its big enough, minimum 600 ft-lbs and 1/2"drive.

well finally got it off with 200lbs of tq. I went over to Walts and he took it off with his air gun. I went to 2 different shops before and they wouldn't take it off saying that it was a liability issue. Anyways, the part that goes into the intermediate shaft didn't fully go pass the snap ring. I tried hammering out the axle again but it's on there pretty good. Should I have anything to worry about?

Re: (Honda Sport)
Just hit it with a hammer it should break free and come right out. It's not going back on your car so you don't have to be carefull.
BTW I have taken mine off and had a hard time as well. What I finally did that made it pretty damn easy was take the 2.5' breaker bar and pulled up using my legs to get the strenth. This way you know your aplying all the force to the nut and none is being lost by it being offset if you get what I mean. I started this way on the other side and it took me like 2 mins to get it free and I had even forgotton to bang the tab out.

I was using a snapon 2.5' breaker bar. If you where standing on it there would be not only the force turning the bold counter clockwise but also the down presure away from the hub. That would kill ratchets. Damn good thing Sears will give you new ones for free though You would think that if you use your ratchet as a hammer and bust it open they wouldn't take it back but they do.
