Hi all, helping my little brother out with his car. It is a 200 Prelude SH with low 100k miles. We bought it knowing it needed a clutch, and limped it home.

After fixing the clutch, it also had a CEL and burned some oil. Turned out the previous owner has aftermarket cams and swapped them out for stock before selling. He never reset the valve lash and the valves were not closing all the way. Rebuilt the head, put on a new head gasket as well as did the timing belt.

Unfortunately the engine still burns oil. It is pointing towards the rings since it the valve seals have been replaced. It burns more than a qt in 1000 miles.

my brother doesn't have the time for me to rebuild the engine as a side project, so we were looking at an engine swap. Unfortunately it seems that the ATTS block is different, and also hard to come by.

What are our options? I don't think it he is too attached to the ATTS, is it worth swapping over to a base engine and trans? it seems like a lot of work to do that. or could I get an ATTS block from a JDM importer? What would you recommend?

As far as I know the SH was a USA/CANADA only model. Your best bet is a rebuild. You will need something fabricated to fit a regular block into your SH chassis.

It looks like the jdm type S had ATTS? At tleast H Motors is selling as it does.

If we went this route, how direct is the swap if we swapped everything?

or to save money, and only got an engine and ECU is it plug and play?

Not sure about your model, as I'm familiar only with JDM. But... Seems that you have H22A, right? These motors are known as "oileaters" after 100k mile. It's possible to fix this problem, but you need the procedure which is called "capital repair" in Russia. Bushing change, head works, rings change and so on... The main problem is that you cannot just take the ordinary sizes, you have to find so called "repairing size" parts. It can cost you more than buying an used but still good H22A or H23A.

If you go with the jdm type-s engine, it will have the correct ATTS mounts and such. Just transfer any sensors or other parts that are different over from your old engine, i.e. the oil pump will need to be swapped, so that the crank sensor can bolt on to read from the correct spot, etc. Other wise it is a fairly straight swap.

...you can just add oil.

Or at the least, figure out why it's burning it. A compression test takes 10mins. Try that before shopping for engines.

cpl_rampage, BTW, did you replace oil rings? That is the first step of your problem solution.

If I beat the dog outta my H It burns oil and I change it every 2800 miles.

The dipstick its always nice and clean but the Oil goes somewhere and its not on my driveway

Considering some of the responses here, I dont think every was reading the original post. Compression was terrible because of the valve lash issue after the previous owner swapped back to stock cams and didn't reset the lash. I rebuilt the head and put it back on but still consumes a lot of oil. I could re-ring the engine but it is such a pain in the *** to take the head off in the car because of ATTS. Might as well pull the whole engine/trans at once to do the re-ring, and if you are gonna go that far, why not put a younger, more powerful engine in.

Thank you to snobordboy for giving me a straight answer! Now are the JDM type S engines different compression? Since they have ~20 more HP, is it recommended to run it on the USDM ECU, or should we get the whole harness and ECU and use the JDM one?

Did you do a compression test AFTER the new head? Why would you not? A compression and leakdown test can condemn the rings or make them passable.

You're not burning alarming amounts of oil (relatively speaking).

If the rings/bottom end IS the culprit, you can't typically just re-ring a H22. It will usually need sleeves and rings. At which point you either build it or toss it.

If you really just want to replace the engine, look for the ATTS model. I think JDM Type S's were ATTS equipped. Try jdmenginescorp.com. They label the ATTS blocks as "SH" or "ATTS".

For the cost of a ATTS longblock, you can buy a blacktop swap with LSD trans. Or spend a few hundred more on a redtop swap with LSD trans.

ATTS is stupid. Replace it with a real LSD. If anyone is going to argue in favor of ATTS, ask for a legitimate reason WHY ATTS would be better than a mechanical LSD. They won't be able to answer.

On my jdm h22a I can go 7500 miles without burning even 1 quart of oil. I don't understand why some engines burn so much oil and some don't. It's really weird.

Mileage and maintenance. Wait till ypur swap has some miles on it. It'll start burning.
