VTX head oil leak.....
Been riding all summer with slow oil leak off top left side of the rear cylinder. Didn't seem to get any worse. Now at 17,000km I checked the oil level......it was very low. Changed the oil (will change filter and oil again later)......filled up. At the same time of oil change, I changed the spark plugs. They all had some oil on the threads.
Q1. Is the oil on sparkplugs a problem? Is it related to the other leak?
Q2. Should I be concerned with the slow cylinder head leaking? Or can this be solved by tightening the head?

Oil on the sparkplugs can be cause for alarm, if the oil is on the tip of the spark plug that goes into the combustion chamber. You're experiencing leaking around your valve cover, there is also a seal between the valve cover and the hole in the valve cover that allows the spark plug to get into the engine head. This seal is probably leaking and getting oil on the spark plug. I do not think you have a problem with your cylinder head and you should NOT attempt to tighten it unless its part of regular maintenance.
its very likely you need to remove the valve cover and replace the gasket/seals to stop the leaking and not the cylinder head.
of course, if your engine is burning oil (visibly out the exhaust, blue smoke) and the spark plug TIP is covered in oil, then you have much greater problems, but it doesnt sound like you're experiencing any engine running problems so i dont think this is the case.
the threads are probably getting saturated in oil when you removed them from the head and there is some oil accumulated in the spark plug recess.
either have the valve cover gasket/seals changed out or buy the service manual and parts and do it yourself.
good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hey CBRF4i,
The VTX is a fast bike for older guys like me and your father. They say a VTX 1800 will beat a Busa, for the first 50 feet. I enjoy racing and spankin the Patriotic Traditional Bikes (Hardley Doeseverun).
Ride safe,

Re: VTX head oil leak..... (bird_man1800)
Because of the recent insurance explosion, I have to sell my FZ1.....boo hoo! So I have been riding the VTX. Have grown to love it! It handles all the excruciating potholes and bumps of the city (I call it the 2 wheeled truck!) and more! I am very tall so the "beast" is just right for me! Sound is good too. I work at Harley Davidson and they are too loud! The VTX has the torque I need to make quick moves.
My Element on the otherhand........is my favorite Honda yet! My former yellow VTR is a close second with my first 87 Honda civic dx in third! She is Fuji Blue and manual transmission (the best!). Fits me and my personality.

Re: VTX head oil leak..... (falconGSR)
Finally had a mechanic look into the oil leak.......it does seem to be coming from the valve cover which does NOT have any gasket, seal, etc. It is sealed from the factory with sealant. This being said, I have a few choices.
1. First call Honda and see if they will cover under warranty (just 2 years old with heak leak!). Worth a try!
2. Purchase VTX service manual and fix leak myself (lots of work! Winter project!). Of course you must remove the engine from the frame in order to reseal the valve cover! I don't think so!
3. Give to pro mechanic to wrench......was quoted 10 hours labour = $750 Canadian$ for a leak I cannot fix!
I hope to plead mercy with Honda and go from there.......wish me luck!
