Re: r6 or cbr600
while i'm sure you love your bike, and I'm happy that you do--your advice sucks.
not everyone is you, and belongs on a liter bike to start out. granted, I have my doubts about your ability to really ride a motorcycle beyond 160 mph top speed runs, but maybe you're just better than 99.9% of the motorcycle riding world.
a 600 has more than enough power for us regular dudes.

Re: r6 or cbr600
I asked this same question on the Nesba forums once, which is obviously dedicated to nothing but track riding and most people said the 600rr over the R6. However, from what I've seen I typically see more R6's than RR's at the track.
What is also interesting is if you go to 1000rr.net most of those guys actually ride 600's on the track.

You can kill yourself as quickly with a 1000cc or a 600cc bike (or 50cc).
From the OP's experience (250cc 2-strokers are a bit peaky, aren't they?), with some road bike experience, so he knows some clutch/trottle/brake control and all the other good stuff... and very importantly when to put the foot down.
So, any sportbike is good. I'm with the folks that say all the modern sportbikes are close, in regards to performance (USD forks, fuel injected, tuneable, etc). So it comes down to fit and style.
Good luck, and keep the shiny side up!

Re: r6 or cbr600
Anyway, you are right. If somebody races a 2-stroke 250 off-road then they should have no problem with a 4-stroke sportbike.

Re: r6 or cbr600
Id suggest finding a CBR600 used from the classifieds. If you decide to goto a dealership enjoy the payments and warranty. Just find a bike youre comfortable on and go from there, and dont settle, find what you really like.
