Re: over mileage bike
Every bike is going to be different. Some bike models are going to be just fine at that mileage, where others might be in need of work.
What kind of bike are you looking at?

Re: over mileage bike
def more info. At least state what bike it is, and previous maintenence. All sportbikes need to get a Valve clearance check at around EVERY 20,000-25,000 miles. spark plugs, air filter, maybe sprocket/chain, just get on some model specific forums and see what others post up about. Ive actually NEVEr heard of a clutch needing to be replaced, but honestly not many sportbikes live to 35k =/

Re: over mileage bike
carbs cleaned resynchd, filter plugs, oil change, sprokets, chain, tires and oil change are obvious, throttle cable, brake pads
fuel petcock, fork seals (if hydro front suspension) pretty much means anything that is not a springer. some wear and tear items, seat ripped mabe new grips. might as well go fluid resivors too.
other things that are not normal (rusted kick stand, breaking, lever, wheel, brake line spring leak. these things fall apart after like 25-35k haha.
with car at 40k what do you need? besides oil changes? air filter and brake pads? maybe belt(s).

Re: over mileage bike
i have a 92 cbr600 F2 with 37K on it. the motor runs fine but it needs shift forks which is getting done now. i have replaced so far the chain and sprockets, brake/coolant fluid, air filter, spark plugs, front pads and its also getting a carb clean/sync and valve adjustment with the shift forks even though it did not quite need it yet. I just did not want to have it apart again for a while so i am doing it now.
so besides from the basics i have only had to do shift forks and a carb clean and sync and valve adjustment.

Re: over mileage bike
Again that is going to depend on the model you buy... I had a Kawasaki EX 500 (think Ninja 500r) with 89k miles on it when I finally sold it. I bought it at 19k miles. Bikes can last for a while if you treat them well. Other than consumable parts (tires, brakes, maintenance) I replaced the sprokets one time, along with the chain and fork seals.

Re: over mileage bike
I have a RC51 with 22K on it but its probably not that high because I don't have a speed-o-healer on there and it registers higher then what its doing. But I would guess probably about 15k+ and it runs perfect so far.

Re: over mileage bike
Something with 35000 miles from a dealer, that had one mature owner and a full service history is going to be different than something with 5 or 6 owners, crashed a few times (crashes can have terrible 'long term' effects on engines!) and the same oil filter since day one.
steering stem bearings can go as early as 10k miles
and wheel bearings might want checking
i think modern 600's need valve clearances at 16k miles
Any mileage after that i'd imagine you'd want to think about changing Fork oil and inspecting fork seals/slider bushings.
and maybe swingarm bushings or back shock.
every part has a service limit and is replaceable, so a bike can last forever, depending on the condition of what you buy or how many jobs you want to do to it.
i've never heard more stories and talk of engines taking mileage and abuse than i have about Honda engines from the last fifty years, (backed up by my own experiences in the last 20), so i cant recommend a Kawasaki, Suzuki or Yamaha for this.

Re: over mileage bike
how much would that cost for shift forks, carb clean and sync and valve adjustment? any price estimates?

Re: over mileage bike
might have to do belts too, but you can do most of this yourself.

Re: over mileage bike
My first bike, an '87 Ninja ZX750R bought new in 1987 went 75k miles before I sold it still running like a top - just oil/chain/sprockets/tires/valve adjustments were all it needed and it still had the original clutch! My F2 had close to 40k miles on it and didn't need anything - ran great.
My Hawk's mileage is unknown - estimated around 30k - and needs nothing. It all boils down to proper maintenance and not abusing it.
The question is - has the one you're looking at been properly maintained?

Re: over mileage bike
If it's a CBR, hi miles start at 100k+ in my own mind.
for the other big 4, i wince at around 30k.
for a 2stroke, ducati, triumph 15k.
it all depends on the bike. for instance the 99-02 R6 has transmission problems. So does the 05-06 kawi zx6-r. Hondas have regulator/rectifier issues but that's not really mileage related.
