OMG, I saw the new 1000rr today....I WANT ONE!!
I knew that the new RR's were cool and went under a redesign but I had not seen the black anyellow version until today at the shop. My jaw dropped. The bike looks absolutely amazing and I want one now.
I am thinking of when I get the 748s back together and running right, of trading it in. They told me that they would give me 8k trade in on the Duc. That would leave me with about $4k to finance.
Before I do actually go through with the deal (if I do), I need to make sure of the bikes performance and if it will in fact be an upgrade or just a mediocre bump over my track prep 748s.
My mods to the 748s are as follows
Full Termi exhaust
Cycle cat rarset and clips
cycle cat aluminum vented clutch cover
Mad Duc slipper clutch
Pirelli Supercorsa's
Race computer
monoposto conversion
carbon lower fairing
I have also had to get a new engine for it due to the fact that I melted a piston mid way through the season last year. The engine is being installed right now at my friends shop, KWS Motorsports.
Bike cost $14,800 new and has about $6.5k in upgrades
Do you think it is worth it?
Tell me this does not look sexy.......

Re: OMG, I saw the new 1000rr today....I WANT ONE!! (DirtySol)
I kinda feel that I am getting ripped if I trade the bike in.....maybe if I do get the CBR, I should sell the Duc privately first and then just pay for the bike in full....
I honestly think I can get a bit more for the bike privately due to the fact I have done so much to it making it ready for the track.
hell, the clutch alone cost $2,200
the Termi titanium full system cost just over $2k
and the programmable race computer cost me an additional $600 on top of the price of the exhaust.

While I'm not a huge fan of the looks, (but i dont think its ugly) i can appreciate the engineering behind the bike.
As for your trade in, thats relatively a very high trade in value for a dealership. Selling a Duc to anybody but a fellow Duc lover is financial suicide IMO. I would never buy one no matter how sexy they sound/look.
Good luck with your decision. I forsee less mechanical headaches in your future.

as with most anything else, bike mods add little to resale/trade in value. only moto-philes will appreciate and pay for the extra parts

How true is the rumor that the new 1krr has the drag coeffecient on par with 250 gp bikes? I know its not really a big deal but it would be cool if it was true.

Re: (tmkpres)
I was at the dealership yesterday and saw that exact color combo in person. I kind of like it but for a "shorty" exhaust it really is bulky and the fender on the back is absolutely huge when you see it in person. I love the 748 but the maintenance free lifestyle of owning a honda is something worth noting.

stay away from the first of anything honda produces. the 2nd year is ALWAYS much more refined. painted swing arm etc, and better color combos become available.

I'm sorry, but I have to comment on these comments. Ducati's are not really all that maint. heavy. You want to see something with maintenence issues, own anything with a pushrod V-twin.
The timing belts are required to be changed every 12k miles or every two years, whichever is first and the valves need to be adjusted at the same time. Any person that is capable of minor repairs to a bike is COMPLETELY capable of doing both in less than 5 hours. Now tell me honestly, when you guys are doing a tune up on your bike, do you take less than five hours to do so? I guessing that you take a similar amount of time.
Duc's are not as high maintenence as most people think. The ones that believe this are the ones that do not have the ability to do it themselves and have to pay $600 to have it done. The Desmo valvetrain is AMAZINGLY easy to shim, you just need a set of feeler guages, a magnet and a calculator. You can remove the valve spring keepers with your hand and replace the shims if necessary (most of the time you are just replacing a max of four or five shims).

Re: (DirtySol)
I am just trying to decide if it is worth the trade....
Will my lap times be any faster with this?
What does this bike have to ofer that the 748 does not aside from being new?
Will I end up having to spend another $7k on upgrades to make this bike a formittable opponent?
What will this bike need to handle track use aside from tires and an exhaust?....will it need suspension upgrades and a bump in programming power?
Will the stock clutch assembly be ready for track abuse?
Do I need to upgrade the brakes?
How is the riding position for a 6'1" guy on track?
Is the bike twichy or does it have adequate frame flex to handle well?
I could go on for a long time trying to figure out if it is in fact worth the trade......or will I be wasting my money?

With almost all stock bikes, an upgrade in the suspension is in order.
As far as riding position, the 1kRR isn't any more of a torture rack than the 748.
And it doesn't really need an exhaust for track use, right?
I'd say go for it.

suspension is a given really, but how far will I ned to go? Will a complete change in rear shock be in order? Will I have to replace valves in the forks to get a good feel?
Saying that stock exhaust is not necessary for a bike is like saying that steelies are great track wheels for a car........
You just have to upgrade it
Also, I am 220lbs and every bit of performance upgrade will be helpful to me

Someone on this board made a good point, thats damn near the same badge from a 1960's model honda motorcycle. SO the yamaha looks like an old Honda badge.

I think the CBR is definitely faster. BUT, i don't know if the CBR is gonna be faster with you on it. That's a question only you can answer. I know from first-hand experience that the powerband of higher displacement inline-4's are sometimes unmanageable, but probably less of a concern once one gets faster.
Mag reviewers especially like the brakes and the motor, i think all it may need are rearsets, sliders (if you choose), and rubber to be trackable--add suspension work to make it track-wonderful.
as for the duc, i'd get it back to stock, sell the pricey aftermarket stuff, and trade it in. 8k for an old bike is good money.

Re: (marmaladedad)
I generally have to go up at least 2kg/mm on the spring rate.....on the 748 I went up 2kg/mm in the rear and 2.4kg/mm in the front. I ended up with a very well balanced bike with great braking, I hardly get any nose drop after settling the suspension under hard braking. I found that the bike has a tendancy to like to drift a bit on a set of less grippy tires. I think I might have went too high on upping the spring rate in the rear. At least it is easy to change rear pring rates.
