You got it... depending on what bike you have there are some panels youve got to pry off, then on the ignition there should be a code to turn in at the dealership for the key
takes time though-- and dont expect to pay the $2 you would for a copy at walmart

some of my friends who lost their key just took the ignition or gas tank off into a lock smith and had a key cut that way

Can you do that??? Cause just taking the tank would be alot easier and probably faster???

Most newer bikes do not have codes stamped in the ignition cylinders. The only way to get a key made is to take the ignition cylinder off, and take it to a locksmith - unless you can get the MSO paperwork from the dealer that originally sold the bike new, that will have the key codes. Going to the locksmith will cost about $100.
You can buy a key set, with ignition/gas cap/seat lock off of ebay, but I believe you will still need the old key to get the gas cap off.

If you're going to take a lock off the bike and bring it to a locksmith I would highly recommend taking the actual Ignition down and not the gas tank or helmet lock. I did this before and took my helmet lock down to the locksmith and he made a key that worked but it only worked for that lock because the helmet lock and gas tank lock on my Yamaha (at the time) only had 4 tumblers in the cylinder. The ignition had 6 or 8, I can't remember. So yea, take the whole ignition

Since you only had 1 key I'm assuming you are NOT the original owner of the bike. If you were, the first thing I would suggest is that you scour the original paperwork, if the dealer wasn't too lazy your key code will be on it. Other than that, before doing anything else, I would find a dealer that is able to "cut" a key from the code because they DO NOT all have the "gun" that punches out the keys from the code (not the same machine that you see in Home Depot, etc.). When you take the ignition out be very careful, depending on the year of the bike, the code may be stamped into the plastic surrounding the ignition, if you make it unreadable ... need I say mare? Good luck and once you get it, write it down and put it in a safe place.

No wonder you're in brokeville ... the dealer I worked for charged 7.99 /key and that was in a metropolitan area

Getting a key copied or cut off of a code is not the same as taking apart the ignition cylinder and making a set of keys off of the tumblers.

seriously, and i highly doubt the dealer went out to his bike.
