How dangerous are motorcycles? Fallen riders chime in.

Re: How dangerous are motorcycles? Fallen riders chime in.
Your car must be fast as ****. I'm driving an SV650s (12 sec quarter mile stock) and I raced my friend in his 08 STI from a very slow roll and a smoked him. I don't mean I beat him by a little. It was so bad I thought that he had missed a gear and slowed down. I'm sure he isn't a good driver, but I'm not a good rider either. My bike is one of the slower bikes too.
I guess you can call BS on it if you want. I'm not talking about racecars and race bikes though. I don't drive a drag car or a roadrace car...it's a street car thats kinda quick and has good supension and tires. I'm a pretty good driver and my car has good traction in all 4 directions. There is no way I can convince you on the internet, but I promise I have beat lots of bikes, some of them 3 or 4 or 5 times in a row on the highway. Many of them on twisty roads and several from a dig too. Granted I get stomped by R1s and stuff like that (the last one passed me on one wheel hehe) but your average 600 with a fart pipe and a shitty rider is easy prey no matter what the situation. Nearly all of them give me a thumbs up afterward

I'm definatly under 400whp and the car is about 2200lbs. I'm sure that most of these bikes would hurt me with a good rider but that wasn't the case. What's the deal with those suzukis that sound like a ducati? big motor but slow?

That Suzuki is the TL1000R, V-twin. It's slower than a modern 600, but still a cool bike, like it's counterpart, the RC51.

It was a cool looking bike, it had some exposed frame stuff going on and a nice front plastic around the headlight. This one was louder than my open wastegate though.

I'm sure that's the case for most of these guys. I'm going to do more scientific testing this summer with some two wheeled friends of mine. What does a slow 600 trap in the 1/4? how about a fast one?

Oh, did the bike looked like this? If so, it's a TL1000S, not an R.

Yeah, I think that's it. I like how it looks a little more utilirarian than a lot of street bikes.
sorry, end of threadjacking

sound like a ducati because they are powered by twin's. think you're talking about the SV650
sounds like a well built ducati lol, i always thought my friends bike was going to rattle itself to pieces. (that clack clack clack sound the clutches make)
not the usual 4 cylinder bike most people think of when they hear Japanese bike.

Since you're 18 and want to jump on a new supersport bike, I'd day don't get a bike. We don't want to see a RIP thread for you. I've nearly became a hood ornament on a SUV because they were going the wrong way on a one way street. I can't count how many times I've nearly been wiped out by a driver now paying attention. It also doesn't help you're in Socal (it's dangerous enough in a car).

Most of the people who claimed to have raced bikes and won, were only racing themselves. I can't remember how many times I'll be taking off from a light and have some douche bag winding it out to see if they can keep up when I'm riding normally.

That has happened to me on several occasions.
Last night, some African fool in a Benz kept poking his head out the window to see if he recognized me.

Motorcycles are like drugs. You first taste for them is generally from a friend. Then you want to get your own. Then you need more and more to urge your fix. If you abandon them, you will feel withdrawal for the rest of your life.

Figured I would contribute.
Lowsided at ~100mph into a 25mph rated onramp which I used to take at 90mph.
From the news paper photographer
The only reason the bike is stopped where it is, because there is a rail support bend over (I took out two), nearly split the bike in half, chopped the exhaust off and took out about ~5 inches of the swing arm nearly splitting that in two.
I still can't comprehend exactly how lucky I was, I have nearly no memory of that day.
Must have gotten knocked out when my head hit the ground because if I was looking at where I was sliding, I would have been decapitated.
Went under the rail and slid ~30 more feet.
My left leg hit the rail taking out a 3 inch wide, 1 inch tall, ~1 inch deep gash that missed my leg artery by 1cm as the doctors told me.
Morphine is a hell of a drug.
If you're looking at getting a bike, get life insurance first.

Re: How dangerous are motorcycles? Fallen riders chime in.
Im 18, two of my friends just got a (1) 07 gsxr 750 and (2) 08 gsxr 600. Neither had any type of previous riding experience. They've had their bikes for about 4-5 months now with minimal falls. And of course, i want one too now. However, they scare the **** out of me. I've had numerous people tell me to get the idea of buying a bike out of my head, including 2 co-workers who quit riding after accidents that took them to the hospital to the E.R. I live in Los Angeles which is a VERY conjested city and full of idiotic drivers. I need input on whether or not its a good idea for me to buy one.
*Dont say "start on a less powerful bike" as i will not. If im going to spend my money on a motorcycle its going to be on something i like which would be either a 600RR or 07-09 gsxr 600. I've tried to get myself to buy a "learning" bike but cant get myself to do it.
* i have NO riding experience except sitting on my friends.
Thanks guys

Don't do it.

On twisty roads is where plenty of guys have no idea what they're doing on a bike. Also, there's no way i'm going to ride 100% on a public road, especially playing cat/mouse with a car. And i'm sure the right car/driver would make a fool out of me on a track--but it takes some serious car/skills.

I've been riding hard and fast on bikes for 38 years. Any time you pony up to the seat you need to be prepared for the reaper. Embrace him, and throttle up. Anything less and your just a poser.

Re: How dangerous are motorcycles? Fallen riders chime in.
i dont think that bikes are dangerous, however there is more risk involved when riding.i lived in socal for 5 years and i couldnt picture not riding in areas such as L.A. for the convieniance of being able to split traffic when its bumper to bumper.chances are if you arent riding like a jackass and you wear your gear you should be fine.i had a lady cut me off and i lowsided into a median at 55mph,the bike was totaled but i walked away without a scratch due to my gear.i had a helmet with gloves a mesh jacket jeans and boots on and i didnt have a scratch so get gear, any kind just get some.i ride an 07 gsxr 600 and they make graet starter bikes.you shouldnt be scared of a bike its just a machine

Re: How dangerous are motorcycles? Fallen riders chime in.
Riding isn't for everyone. Remember you could ruin your the rest of your life with just one accident. Doesn't matter how prepared and aware you are you can not control the people around you.
I have crashed my bike and made it without a single scratch. I was doing 25mph uphill into a blind left hand going down hill and found that someone decided to leave a piece of saturn fender onto the road. I hit the fender and went into the side ditch where the bike hit the front fender and did a 180 and hit the back fender while i was doing a superman over my bars. Luckily i landed into the ditch that was filled with leaves.
Like everyone else has said "You Will Have a Wreck" it just depends when.
