Well, the 500 twins were pretty maligned when they were new. Slower than the 500 fours, old tech, lots of vibration. Suspension isn't really up to snuff either. Nonetheless I think it can be a cool bike just to tool around on.
Here's a cool comparison from 1976, it features 2 suzuki 2-strokes, a Kaw 2-stroke triple, a Yamaha RD400 and XS500 (my bike exactly), and two Hondas: a CB500T and a CB550F.

On an unrelated note, I ordered a 'new' 2-1 exhaust for my Yam, my old one is absolutely nasty: most of the chrome flaked off a long time ago, and I was using pieces of old license plates and clamps to cover all of the holes

Got my 'new' exhaust today. It turns out its a regular 2-2, the photo was small and I automatically assumed it was 2-1. I'm not really upset, I was on the fence about getting a quieter 2-2 system anyways, so I'm not complaining. Right now I'm using steel wool and chrome polish to try and get them too look decent. There's a bit of minor pitting and discoloration, but I only paid $50 and I bought this more so to cut down on noise and to not have holes in the exhaust more than anything.

I got the 125 running today, took her for a little ride. The clutch cable i ordered is too short so I had to unhook it. Clutchless riding ftw! It only took me a few seconds to realize that the 125 is so small that I can just clunk it into gear while I'm rolling and it won't die or anything. I can also manage to fenagle it into neutral while rolling to a stop if I do everything just right. It also only has a rear brake, lol.
I rode it around the block over and over until I thought my neighbor was gonna call the cops, haha. Now that she runs I have to get a rearview mirror and figure out how to get a license plate for the thing.

I don't really understand peoples' fascination with the 'sand-cast' CB750s. Yeah, there weren't very many made, but its pretty much the EXACT same thing as other CB750s. I woulnd't mind having a 750 myself, they seem like pretty nice every-day bikes. Is it true that the later years of the SOHC (not counting the F2) were really detuned and much slower than the early models?

I'm not fascinated by them at all either, but I do understand it. I much prefer the affordable plentiful ~78 bikes that you can mod to your hearts content like what RJ has done.

some of these bikes remind me of Electra Glide in Blue trying to get an early 70s CL350 for restoring. but most have already been restored.

I don't know where you're looking, but here in Central NY, there are LOADS of the CB350/CL350s. Prices are around $100 for basically a parts bike with no title to $1000 for a decent runner. I'm currently commuting on my brother's CB360, it's really fun for around town riding. I'm refraining from taking it on some of the hairier offroad stuff I took it on earlier, stuff starts to shake loose.
I don't know where you're looking, but here in Central NY, there are LOADS of the CB350/CL350s. Prices are around $100 for basically a parts bike with no title to $1000 for a decent runner. I'm currently commuting on my brother's CB360, it's really fun for around town riding. I'm refraining from taking it on some of the hairier offroad stuff I took it on earlier, stuff starts to shake loose.

I just bought this guy for $100.00:
Its a 1965 Honda 305 Dream. Its my first motorcycle, but I won't be riding it for a while. I bought it mostly for a fun winter project to strip down and restore.

You made out like a thief on that one! Even if it needs some serious work, $100 for a 60s Honda is a damn good deal. I've seen bikes in much worse condition go for $500 or more.
My friend has a '65 Benly 150, sort of like a baby Dream. It's a hoot to cruise around on, not a lot faster but much torquier than our '65 S90. That Dream should be able to pull around 80mph no sweat once its running.

Thanks, Im pretty excited about the project. Everything seems to be in really good shape for being over 40 years old. Once I strip all the old paint off I can get a good look at what Im working with.

Nice find, and a steal at $100 in that condition. Bike is definitely worth much more than that, and will only appreciate in value if cleaned up and kept original.

ive definatly found some. one with 1400 original miles on it, clean as hell. and they are on ebay all day long. there are just none crappy enough and close enough for my taste haha

Here's something from a brazilian forum, a Honda Turuna (Brazilian model for the CG125)...the bike had been sitting for 20 years...and it required no major stuff to make it run. The guy is going to restore it.

respect to all the japanese bikes, but as a honda lover i couldnt see myself buying n wrenching on anything else. the 1969 cb750 was the original super bike. it was the first production bike to have a 4 cyl motor, disk brake, and the reliability that we know as honda. this bike single handedly put bsa, norton, and triumph to shame. bout 2 months ago i bought 4 cb750s for $200 bucks a piece, with titles for 2 of em. got a 73,74,75 and a 76. i got the 74 running the other day with just a carb rebuild ($70 in parts). and a new battery. it is currently broken down to the frame. and im almost done sandblasting it. its gonna be a cool lil cafe, for around town duty. ill post pics of my progress when i get a chance thou ill prob start a new thread for that.
