99 CRV 4wd 5spd, 2nd gear issue
I have a 99 CRV 4wd 5spd, all stock except intake/exhaust. Last night was a bad snow storm. I got out of my car to clean off the ice from the wipers and when I got back in and started driving away, I pushed first to 5000rpm, and shifted to second. My foot slipped off the clutch pedal and the gear grounded like a B*tch and failed to go in. I promptly pressed the clutch and engaged second. Nothing seemed wrong.
I didn't think anything of it until the next stop when I put it in 2nd and started to slow down. When it's off throttle and slowing down the gear pops out. Sometimes all the way, sometimes just disengages the dog teeths. I tested it a few times and it's every single time I let off the gas in second. I can hold it down and it won't pop out, but you can feel the feedback in the shifter. I force it to stay engaged.
I have no idea what I did to this transmission, but I'm afraid it's going to cost alot of money. I did some research and found that maybe I bent the shift fork, and the synchro ring didn't like what I did and gave up on me. Anyone have any similar issues? Or any knowledge to point me in the right direction?
Side note, a friend 98 CRV 4wd 5spd won't engage first unless you rev match or stop entirely. Is that a synchro or a shift fork? We might just do both our transmissions at once. We are pretty hands on, and I feel comfortable working the inside of a gearbox (I'm a mechanic at heart, engineer by trade). But I don't know the symptoms/what to look for. I've only ever changed a bearing inside a gearbox, so I'm not familiar with bent/damaged mechanism.
Alot of google searching yielded some info, but nothing pertaining to a CRV directly.

Your friends problem is 1st gear syncro, yours could be either and I'll guess bent fork....a little easier to fix than a syncro but it looks like you're going to find out for yourself. Don't forget a new clutch and hd pressure plate. Good luck.

Re: 99 CRV 4wd 5spd, 2nd gear issue
Hey I have a similar issues on my 99 CRV rt4wd 5spd. All my gears work no pop outs or grinds. I almost always shift at 3k. When I shift 1st to 2nd its not really smooth seems to take a sec for the shifter to go into 2nd gear but it grabs no problem. Sometimes with the clutch on you can hear a noise when the shifter goes into 2nd sound like the same noise as if I were going into reverse. I don't know what it could be. I'm thinking Flywheel and clutch. I did change and inspect the tranny fluid but I didn't see anything out of the norm. I used oem fluid. Any help would be great.

Try matching engine and trans speeds when you shift from 1st to 2nd, if the shifting is smoother I would say it's your 2nd gear syncro. Do you have a similar feel when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd?

Reviving this incredibly old thread because I am having the same issue after I missed 2nd gear real bad the other night in my ‘99 5-speed. Did you ever figure out of it was a bent fork? If yes, I’m gonna live with it for awhile, if it was a synchro, I’m going to see if GM synchromesh friction modified can bandaid me until I get a chance to rebuild.
