Default 99 cr-v has gear oil smell

I recently bought a 99 cr-v 5 speed and 180,000 miles; there is a smell of gear oil when i drive and no leaks on the ground. it runs good and the guy i bought it from mentions that it was leaking a bit but i haven't had time to check it out. any suggestions where to start looking would be appreciated.

the only oil that might smell like gear oil is the dual pump fluid in the rear differential if it is a rt 4wd crv.

cheat around the rear differential. if you need to replace this fluid use only Honda dual pump fluid from a dealership.

other things you can check is the power steering lines and the power steering rack for power steering fluid leaks.

you can also check under and around the transmission for manual transmission fluid leaks.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check these spots for leaks.
