Default Trouble with Vehicle speed sensor

Problem is i have no speed reading on my speedo.
Cable driven VSS i believe it is a YS1 transmission, honestly its been so long since i bought it i forgot what it was.

I took the cable out, cable is good. Connections into the VSS is good as well as the connection into the back of the cluster. Took the VSS out and with the cable in, gave it a spin on the drill. Clockwise: nothing happens.. Counter-Clock: it pegs at about 50mph so that checks out, although i dont know why it would only read spinning in one direction. Put the VSS back in the tranny and nothing... So confused. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

I have replaced bad VSS's in several cars, but I especially remember 1 motor/trans swap I put in. I tested the wires, and even replaced the VSS with 3 good replacements....nothing fixed it. Finally, I took the whole transmission off, and put on my old transmission, then all 3 good VSS's worked fine. Apparently, the transmission can possibly be at fault??

Take your cluster out and make sure the cable is in ur transmission then drive and put pressure on the cable inside the Speedo cable housing. If when you put pressure on it it spins ur good and if it spins without pressure ur super. Then after you can look and see that the cable spins when driving you can fix it. Next get some needle nose pliers and pull the cable as far out as possible and make sure it still spins when driving. Then hook ur cluster up and you should be good. If the needle jumps alot ur connection is bad at the trans or cluster so re do it. And if that doesn't work just put some paper on the end of the cable and shove it in ur cluster that will make it catch the speedo.

Im really hoping thats not the case, but im beginning to think that because everything seemed to work when i had it apart. Its when i put the vss back in the tranny then nothing seems to work again which could indicate the gear isn't catching.

So what you're saying is to pull the cluster off and make sure its grabbing? Ill test that again but when i tested the vss i hooked a drill up to the end of it with the cable in, and when i spun the drill it sent the speedo to about 60mph so i know its grabbing in the back of the cluster.

So i pulled the cluster off and gave it a short bit of acceleration and the cable spins so its not the cable or the VSS. But, i took a spare cable and spun it in the cluster and it moves the needle, so i guess its not grabbing in the back of the cluster?

When I my car did this exact thing I had to get it tight in the transmission and the pull the spinning part of the cable out as far as I could with needle noses. That fixed it but my real problem was the cable was broken at the transmission so I had to do some crimping. But if you pull it out far enough it will catch the Speedo. Just make sure it spins after u pull it out. The cable has to be protruding pretty far to catch the cluster so just keep pulling till it catches.

yeah, thats what i ended up doing, had to pull it out with a needle nose and it finally grabbed correctly. Thanks for all the help!
