Default question on dyno tuning

im getting a v-afc soon. does anyone know places that will dyno tune it for me closest VA Tech (~roanoke, VA)? also, can anyone who has actually had their v-afc dyno tune explain to me what the procedure is. do i give them the car and they set it up by running it on the dyno looking for max power? or do i pay per run and then adjust the v-afc myself and wait for another run and repeat the cycle if needed?

and how much does this cost?

Max,

I'm in PA, so I can't give you a location of where to go. I go to www.speednation.com . Basically, there are two price steps there. One is a "dyno day" with friends, bring a group of 3 or more, pay $65, and you get 3 runs, a quarter mile run, and a 0-60 time. However, 3 runs will not tune something like a VAFC, or a cam gear (which I just did on my 85 CRX SI e-prepared car .... took 13 runs to sort it out).

So, you rent "dyno time", usually on the order of $100/hour or so. Usually the person running the dyno can help give you tips for tuning your curves. Mike Ancas at SpeedNation is a Honda whiz ( he wrote www.hondabook.com ), and really helped sort my car out, not just for peak power, but useable autocrossing power.

Hope that answers at least some of the questions you had.

Quality dyno time is far from "wasting dough". My dyno runs are on a Mustang dyno, which is a power absorption dyno, instead of a "Dynojet" which is inertia based. Very quality readings.

If you're not concerned about missing a few horsepower, than there are other options to tune your car. But, I've seen dyno sheets of people that come in, with a handful of mods to their car, and then slap on a cam gear, and tune it. Walking out with 20wheel horsepower is not a bad deal. Your mileage may vary
I tuned for about 2.5 hours last Friday, to find about 5-6 horsepower throughout the band, and moved my torque peak a bit. Quite a difference for autocrossing.

It's $100 an hour. Or, talk to a dyno shop, usually you can work things out . JG Engine Dynamics (very very fast honda builder ) charges flat rates for tuning things like AFC's and Haltech Engine Management solutions. Basically, dyno tuning consists of this:
1.)Run.
2.)Check horsepower/torque curves
3.)Make one change
4.)Repeat step one
For something like an AFC, I'd expect $2-300 to be a decent number for QUALITY tuning. Something that will make the absolute most out of your current setup.

Take care,
