Default New to cars and car tech, just bought 1991 honda civic hatchback what to do?

Hi every one, due to recent life mistakes and events I'm currently getting my life back on track. This begins with my old cars transmission going and selling it for what ever I could get for it, basically just for a car that was "driveable?" Anyway I just bought a 91 hatchback 4 speed manual for 300 bucks didn't think that it was too bad considering it drives and is able to get me back and fourth to work. So after all of my friends telling me about certain things that I could do to this car It seems that I will turn this into my new hobby.

However, all of my friends have given me so much advice it leaves me beside myself on what direction to take being that I'm definitely no mechanic however I basically can look at things and figure out how things work. Although I figured that half a battle is won being that I Have worked with computers since really early in my life. So electrical concepts I understand :D

Soon as I find my camera <.< >.> I will post pics of what how it looks as of right now. It definitely needs a bath and I am aware that it will definitely be a project. Money of course is always an issue however i figured maybe a part or so every two weeks I'm sure i could budget.

Anyway the things that my friends told me i could do.

Engine swap to a B16A friend said that it should be a direct bolt in application just need wiring harness and transmission. However I know that the B16A probably will have a 5 speed transmission and If i go this route it will be the most expensive and since its a 4 speed I'm sure there some work needed inside the car as well. then he added upgrade ECU something like hondata, turbo it and take it to a 1/4 mile and get some numbers. (of course i know somewhat of the amount of work involved in that but I prepared to do so on this route)

Just work the D15 thats in it (I'm pretty sure its the D15 i honestly just got it home because it was drivable LOL) basically told me intake, intake manifold, exhaust header, exhaust. he said skunk2 would be my preference. The engine in it got 167k miles on it another reason why maybe a swap might be a good intention but i hear good things about Honda motors and trannys.

Then there was the extreme rendition of it all. Him saying putting a kxxx model engine in it and such and such. I don't know much about these engines but the way my friend made it seem id have to basically gut the firewall and such and well I'm just saying it because he mentioned to me. he maybe a friend telling me these things but its my wallet hes messing with so he doesn't care LOL.

So I'm basically posting just to maybe see what any one thinks I'm new to fourm haven't spent too much time on it will with in the Coming months, and see where my new hobby takes me.

Thanks.

As a long time Honda tech person.

I would say this site, run from it.

Seriously get it in tip top shape and learn to push it to ITS limit before spending a dime making it "faster"

Once you do, feel free to search things like the MPFI swap, then look at bolt ons and best of all a trans swap for the car.

But really get her in tip top shape first.

There is a wealth of information on this site, though due to a change in site regulations in '07 new information is not allowed to fall into any of the following categories:

1). accurate
2). truthful
3). helpful
4). tech-based
5). safety conscious

With that said, I highly recommend you search the archived information, preferably that which is older than '07. Your car can be anything you want it to be, but as Max has stated, make yourself the best and then worry about the car. For simple mechanical repairs, the archived information should get you through. For information regarding modifications I suggest you first determine what the car's intended use will be, then consult any rule book, sanctioning body or tech official regarding mods.
