Default How many teeth can the timing belt be off without causing damage?

Long story short, I bought a B18A1 1990 hatch about a month ago. Two weeks ago, the motor lost oil pressure. I had a line on a wrecked 93 Integra for cheap, so I just pulled that motor and put it in my EF.

Had it all running good friday night, drove it from the shop home, and then was on my way to hockey when i hear a loud ZZZZ sound. Pulled over, shut it off, and called my brother to bring me a 10mm. I pulled the valve cover and found a tiny bolt on the water pump pulley, and one edge of the belt chewed up.

I set the crank to TDC, and the intake cam is 10 teeth out, the exhaust cam is 4 teeth off. Think I bent any valves? I'll be putting a new belt on it tomorrow night.

contact usually only occurs when the belt slips. thus allowing the timing to be far enough off that the piston touches the valves. ive never had any issues unless the belt slips.

you should be fine even though it is an interferance motor. we just had one in last week where the belt broke while driving. you can normally tell when you pop the valve cover off move the rockers around and see if you have lots of play, lastly you can put the belt back on and do a compression check.

edit: oh it was still on...um well do a compression check i guess. did the car die or did you just hear the noise and shut it off?

Probably bent intake valves.

Before you put another belt on it, set the timing correctly with the existing belt and do a compression test - that way you won't be replacing the belt in vain if you find that it needs more work.

Seems like it jumped timing.....Yea just do the compression test when you set timing back.Usually if it jumps timing it will cut off my brothers timing belt broke and it cut off quick good thing he wasnt revving high.

Not that it matters how high you were revving. Your pistons are still going to be slapping those valves 15 times per second at the LEAST.

I've heard of cases where the pistons have pushed the valves into a seated position where no damage was done. Each case is different, and the only way to really find out is to check it. Goodluck though.

thanks guys. I might pull the cams and do a compression leak test. But I'll probably just put this belt where it belongs, and check compression first of all. Will let you know the results when i find them out.

Just to update this, I put a new belt on, and it fired right up. Compression is good too.
