Here we go again with the AC compressor
Last March my stock compressor on the 89 SI went out so I bought a reman Sanden tr70 from Orilleys. After redoing everything (spent all kinds of time/money) the AC worked great up until about a month ago. I discovered the reman compressor was leaking, so I exchanged it for another reman because of the 2 year warranty.
Well today I was draining out the oil from the new reman and I noticed it came charged with 5 ounces of oil, and the oil looked really dirty with particles floating around in the oil. The sticker on the compressor says that it comes charged with 3 ounces of oil and that I should add the additional amount of oil based on my car. Does the manufacturer of this compressor have a clue??
This is getting too over whelming to go through this again. Should a reman compressor come with black dirty oil? Or do I go back to Orilleys and demand another compressor. I was expecting the oil to look clear, and if it is then when I return this one, I will drain the oil right there at the store and examine it!
****!

Re: Here we go again with the AC compressor
Well I went back to Orilleys on Thursday and exchanged the compressor (the one I picked up the previous Saturday) that was filled with contaminated oil for another reman compressor they ordered in for me from Phoenix.
The new one had the armature plate dented up slightly but I decided on taking that one after I examined the oil right there on the spot. It looked clear after dumping about an ounce out. But when I brought it home and dumped the rest of the oil out it looked dirty and small particles floating around in it, but looked much cleaner than the last one.
Since at this point I was sick and tired of having to continually go back to Orilleys for another compressor, I decided to take a chance and installed it yesterday.
After 6 hours of reassemblying the entire AC system, I then vacuumed it down I could barley get it to 26 Hg. My heart sank because I suspected a leak. So I charged the system with abount 20 ounces of 134a and looked for leaks and sure enough that F&%$@ new compressor was pissing out refrigant from the back nut.
I was fit to be tied at this point and called Orilleys and told the manager that I wanted a refund ($300 I paid for the original compressor last march). And I also told him I did not want another shitty reman compressor. It is quite clear that reman compressor are crap, the QA on those is really bad!!!
Sure Orilleys will they let you exchange the compressor for another one, but I will not go through this again. The many, many hours of breaking down the system, resambeling and recharging is just too damn time consuming and expensive. And Orileys will not compensate you for your time, cost and grief.
So I discovered the website 1989 Honda Civic A/C Compressor Comp type- Sanden TR70[9774.9784]. 4 grooves 60-01088 NA that is selling a NEW Sanden TR70 compressor. I am going to order it and hopefully this should end this nightmare.
In conclusion; remanufactured compressors should be avoided like the plague, I spoke with 2 AC repair shops and they told me the same thing. They never put in reman compressors because they fail within a year.
Here is a quote directly from Sandens website;
Q: Does Sanden rebuild compressors?
A: No, Sanden does not believe that compressors can be rebuilt with an acceptable quality level. We recommend new, not rebuilt compressors when replacing a broken unit.

Plus 1 for the above post, get a sanden tr90 instead, you also need a used 92 plus bracket. You need to make enlarge the bolt holes on the hoses and make some slight bends to them.
