Default Crx Running Rich

Ok fellas,
My 88 CRX DX is running very rich. I clean the muffler tip and within 1 mile, it is covered in a black mess. Not soot(solid), this stuff is kinda wet...but it does not smell like oil. Every now and then I will get a CEL for the TPS, but I jiggle the connector and the CEL goes away. It has not come back in weeks. I got 24MPG running around (mostly city).

I changed the O2 sensor with a used/better OEM one from the junkyard. That did not change the black muffler tip. It smells like gas coming out of the pipe, but is not smoking at all. It is idling kinda low (400-500). I have a multimeter, but can not find instructions on this site to test the TPS. Pickup seems "normal". I did run seafoam thru the system about 200 miles ago. Any suggestions or ideas?

hmmm, sounds to me like one cylinder is not firing or has no compression. Do a compression test and see first as its the easiest to do. If it is a mixture problem it will be annoying to fix

Ok, I will do the compression test. I have a gauge and am used to doing this on the SR20 motor of my infiniti. Is it the same process? Pull the fuel pump fuse, let the car die, remove all the plugs, open the throttle to WOT and crank the car 6-8 times?

usually all comp tests are the same. warm the engine. Pulll the plugs, wide open throttle with cranking 6-8 times

Also check your MAP sensor, if the vacuum line is hooked up

Ok,
So I did the compression check and was surprised. A honda motor with 164K on it 178 to 180 across the board...all four cylinders. Thats just crazy in a good way. I am sure some of this carbon is making the numbers look so good, but the numbers are all very close together.

I checked out the PCV valve and it was as clogged as a PCV could get. There was about 1/2 inch of backed up carbon in the tube.

I bought new plugs, wires, and a PCV valve. The old plugs were black. I do not know if the PCV valve would cause the "rich" condition, but it sure needed replaced. You think I have this solved, or should I look elsewhere?

The connections to the MAP looked pretty good.
