b16 swap.. drop it off or try and do it myself..help
hey guys, im wonderin if i should have my swap done or try and do it with some friends? everyone always says its better to do it yourself and i really wanna try that but i got like zero tools, literally.. no garage and no experience. (also a dx) although honda-tech has helped me out with every question ive ever had, you guys are great. so im stuck. ive talked to swapshop racing and hookups out here in so cal and they both basically said about 2300-2400 for labor and everything drop off and pick up. the do- it -yourself route, i can get the swap from hmotorsonline$1150 and i can get some linkage and mounts for $250 and i dont know how much all that misc stuff comes up too cause i know i prolly need a harness and a si map sensor too how much would i really save? so any advice or some major help is appreciated, sorry for the short story, thanks in advance

if its not your daily driver then try to do it yourself. youll learn a lot. if it is you have to consider being without your car for up to a week if theres problems or you need parts. also you dont have a garage. me neither i have a carport. if you have acces to storage near where youll be working that will make it much easier. you dont want to leave a b16 hangin on an engine stand over night.

Hey i say do the swap yourself.Your supposed to be proud of your car and what you have built but if you have someone else doing your work its not much to be proud about,You will feel alot better if you just do the swap yourself, It may take alittle longer doing it yourself but it will be fun and you will learn some stuff

Re: (90hatch2fast2pass)
I am a big believer of do it yourself stuff. But, if you don't have a garage, no tools, no hoist, and no experience, I would have to say let someone else do it.
Or start planing, buying all the parts you need, learn how to modify the harness, how to take the linkage appart, etc, get the tools and find a friend with a garage.
I did my B16 swap 4 years ago with absolutely no experience, but I had a garage, tools, hoist and TIME! I had a nother car to get around, that is the most important tool if you ask me.

Re: (Spaceballs the lunch box)
i agree with spaceballs, if you don't have the equipment and have no way of borrowing from a friend or whatnot, i'd just say have a shop do it, especially since its your only car. 2400 seems like a fair price to me for a shop to do it, considering that i usually give myself about 2k for a job like that. and trust me, just because you have the motor does not mean you will not get a chance to work on your car. trust me, if your experience is like virtually everyone else's on here, you will quickly learn all of the in's and out's of your car.

Re: (misfithamster)
you should look up that texassiclub site where dude details step by step the swap..i used this to take heart before putting jdm b18c into my ef sedan since they were so slow and nobody wanted to help around here, even paying them!
btw, i rented a bread down type of engine hoist from a local tool rental place for 40 dollars for two days....not that big a deal.
you do have to have all the clutch and trottle linkages, axles and all - see the http://www.hasport.com site

Re: (Ruby Civic)
alrighty ive decided to try and get a hold of hmotorsonline this week or the end of next week. the website said full swap was 1150 and it comes with.. motor,tranny,axlesw/ halfshaft, alternator, starter, clutch, flywheel, int. ex. manifold, fuel rail, injectors, dizzy, engine harness and all working sensors. im wonderin if anyone else ever picked up from them before and do you get to pick the motor? oh also are the axles and halfshaft that come with it the ones i can use for the swap? i know ill need more stuff but for right now this seems alright to me, but the website said sold out so i dont know till tomorrow when i call if he'll get more soon. thanks for the added input

Re: (misfithamster)
ok, year and model of your car are? if you have an si or ex then it should not be too hard on the wiring as there are only a few changes, but you will have to use your old harness, since the jdm b16 will not go into your app. - it will plug in some places but NOT work.
that sounds bad, but is not so bad - put a tape marker on which sensor it comes off of on your stock motor and you will see where it goes.
did you find the texas si site? that is good since he has plenty of pics and takes it stage by stage w/ numbers, etc. i can help a little w/ some of it or at least you can bounce some stuff off of if you need
by all means ask if you can choose which motor - they may not be able to guaruntee against tranny grinds but you might be able to pull it through the gears. it will come with the intermediat axle, but also the outers? i got mine from 91 ls integra and can not answer this part

if this car is not your daily driver, then i would say go for it. You will most definitly learn a lot during this process. Just make sure you have some helping hands and plenty of tools around, as you will most definitly need them. Also if you are unfamiliar with setting timing, as i was. have someone do it for you before beginning. Thats if you changed your timing belt. Be mindful of the tps, because if it breaks youll have to get a whole tb again. Usdm ones are rivetted, jdm ones are screwed in. the wiring part is easy if you have a si/hf, if you have anything else, save yourself the time and get a hasport wiring harness. other than that its a breeze, have fun

fillmore is in so cal about 25 minutes away from magic mountain kinda far away from nor cal. but thanks man. yeah if we get around to doin my bros swap we'll most likely get hasport to do the wiring for us, and it wont be his daily driver so we'll have plenty of time. just gotta steal someones garage for a bit

FYI, you don't have to get a whole new TB if the TPS breaks. I went to the junkyard with my cordless dremel and a cutting disc. Just cut slots in the rivet-looking shear screws and use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew them. I've even got a few extra of those sensors lying around the garage.
