Icon6 89-91 EF9 Sir b16a OBD0 convert to OBD1 Questions??

I have a few questions about if you can convert a B16 obd0 engine to OBD1? I really couldn't find this exact info so I thought I would start a thread... If there is any threads on this please post some links, Thanks

I know you can convert an engine down from obd1 to obd0 but can you convert up?

I am wanting to convert a b16a 89-91 sir engine to use a USDM P30 ECU so that i can get the car to pass smog in California...

I am buying a EF9 front half cut to get all the parts for a EF9 build, so I will have two engines, and want to know how I go about doing this... Do I just have to swap sensors and dizzy, and ECU plugs... what else is involved??? I will also be trying to use a OBD1 hydro tranny from a del sol vtec. Is there any problems there with using an obd1 tranny with a obd0 engine...

I am building two cars so I am trying to get them both to pass smog since I have all the correct smog equipment from a USDM Del Sol vtec.

The cars i have are:

91 honda civic dx hatch but might try to get a 89 si instead we'll see...
-putting in a OBD0 b16a sir, converted to obd1
-94 del sol OBD1 hydro tranny
-wanna use a USDM P30 ECU to pass smog, I have one USDM and one JDM P30

Also building a:
-89 EF9 sir real deal RHD just a shell for now!
-Using a Del Sol Si B16A3 USDM engine...
-Converting to OBD1 as well
-88-91 YS1 LSD cable tranny OBD0
-Using the USDM P30 ECU

I am gonna be mismatching parts between two cars, that's why I am wanting to convert both to OBD1

I know that's a lot of questions, so any info on this would be great!

Thanks for the response, but

I know I can buy a jumper harness, easy fix, but I am trying to splice and solder on a new harness that is OBD1 for the P30 ECU. From what I've heard passing smog with a REF in Calif., they won't approve the jumper harness... So that's why i'm gonna try to convert the wires and plugs to OBD1.

Also the real question here is can convert an OBD0 JDM B16 engine to OBD1??

Conversion is easy, usethe new distributor and eliminate the resistor box, and use an obd1 intake/throttle body.

But, from my understanding....
YOU CAN NO LONGER BAR A JDM MOTOR

You dont have to get rid of the resister box unless you're running obd1 injectors...you can still use the obd0 manifild and intake throttle body and what not...all did was get a xenocron conversion harness it has vtec for you already too...and a obd1 dizzy...with a obd0-to-obd1 dizzy conversion harness...if you wanna solder those wires it's pretty easy...they're all color cordinated..

Everything works between OBD0 and OBD1 except the distributor. That's exactly how I did it Converted my OBD0 B16 to OBD1 without using a jumper harness, still running the same setup some 4 years later.

If I could do it again I'd use a jumper harness... it was WAY too much work. I had a sore back for days

you can't bar JDM motors. and it depends on the reff you go to if they allow jumpers

ACTUALLY YOU CAN! I HAVE READ THIS ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT FORUMS AND THREADS.... BUT NOT TRUE!

I WENT TO THE REFEREE ABOUT A MONTH AGO WITH A EF CIVIC WITH A JDM B16A THAT I BOUGHT TO SEE IF IT WAS POSSIBLE AND WHAT I NEEDED, CAUSE I KNEW IT WOULDN'T PASS AS IS...

HE TOLD ME THAT I COULD GET IT TO PASS SMOG NO PROBLEM IF I HAD ALL THE EQUIPMENT FROM A 94-95 HONDA DEL SOL B16A3 VTEC...

1. P30 INTAKE MANIFOLD
2. USDM P30 ECU VTEC DEL SOL
3. CORRECT EXHAUST MANIFOLD US B SERIES
4. CORRECT WIRING FOR B16A NO MISSING CONNECTORS
5. CONVERTED TO OBD1
6. NO MISSING VACUUM LINES OR HOSES
7. TIMING HAS TO BE CORRECT FOR A US 94 DEL SOL VTEC
8. (NEW ADD) 4 WIRE HEATED O2 SENSOR

I FORGOT TO ASK THOUGH IF HE WAS COOL TO USE JUMPER HARNESSES SO NEXT TIME I WILL FIND OUT... I GUESS YOU COULD ALWAYS TRY AND IF NOT CHANGE IT AFTER.

DON'T THINK I LEFT ANYTHING OUT BUT COULD HAVE MAYBE PLEASE ADD IF I DID...

SO LONG STORY SHORT JDM B16A ARE STILL PASSABLE IF YOU DO IT RIGHT! COULD BE UP TO THE REF YOU GET IN YOUR CITY THOUGH.

Suscribed : ) Ive got skunk2 intake manifold, p30 ecu, rywire jumper and obd2 distributor. Next on the list is 4wire o2 sensor, obd1 clips, possibly a new cat and aem SRI for a b16 del sol.

Clekers is right the car will run but to get it bard everything needs to be obd1. The resistor box is obd0. From what i hear when the ref pops the hood he needs to see a del sol set up.

Now in cali catlytic converters have specific serial code stamps for individual makes/models. Does this mean i have too install a crx cat or del sol cat? Is it even possible to get a muffler shop to weld a del sol cat on a crx?

Well i figure sence i have done exactly what you are going through i could enlighten you with some info on your builds. Now 1st off i want to mention that i live in northern cali and the last that i heard in June of 2009, Starting January 2010 , JDM engines WILL NOT be able to pass smog in the state of califorina. I am not 100% sure if the law was passed or not. " Jessie " our SMOG ref. for nor cal told me this when i went to ref my buddys car with a JDM motor. BUT! ! ... whats to stop you from getting a hammer stamp with the #2 on it and just marking your block as a B16A2 or Type R B16A3. Anyway, there is ALOT intitled to what you are attempting just so you know. I can help you with info if needed that i got from the ref " wiring diags. Ext Ext. " just know that you got some work inhead of you. I have done many conversions and swaps. Some legal and some not. If the ref will accept your block as a JDM " if it is " then your ok there. other then that if your converting ... IT MUST BE 100% LEGIT or you will fail guaranteed. List of what you will need regardless of what motor to pass at the ref. For example. This is my SMOG Reffed setup that I have. 1990 HF Si Hatch. Full Obd1 conversion " USING STOCK Obd0 HARNESS " ... It is harder this way but cheeper by far. D16z6 out of a 94 Del Sol. " Complete " The motor MUST retain all original parts. IAC, IAT, Distributor, Injectors, TB, Intake and Exhaust mani, AND THE CAT-CONVERTER. " i recommend getting a new one at NAPA or your choice of parts store. There only about 120 bucks and worth it to pass the 1st time. NOT THE 10th time. the things you will need for the wiring part will be, Obd1 ECU harness clips " A-B-D " , Obd1 Injector Clips, Obd1 Distributor Clips " A-B " , o2 Sensor Clip , and Vtec sol. and pressure clips. From there its just wire it up. JUMPER HARNESSES ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ALL WHAT SO EVER ! ! ! at the ref. They will laugh at you. Yet they are total junk, i pitty anyone who uses them. The other MAIN clip you will need is the Service Check connector. Its a 3 pin plug that goes under the dash for the scan tool link up. " To test vehicle speed sensor , brake switch , ext ext. " .... Well i feel like i have given a basic discription of what you will need and what is ahead of you, If you have any questions , hit me up , epichondagod@yahoo.com ..... its not hard but it is time consuming. The wiring part is quite basic, cut and solder, splice here and there. NOTE... IF anyone is planning to do a 1990s INTEGRA SWAP. Some Integras DID NOT have the ELD " Electronic Load Detector " installed on these models. I believe i have the wiring diag. for it if anyone needs it. There is much intitled to the Ref part of it. But when it is done right. You dont have to ever worry about it again.

Also, Why would you want the Hydro tranny. Its way more of a hassle then its worth. Get a Si cable tranny, the gearing in it is better by far anyway. There cheeper to rebuild, hold more power and are much much more reliable, IMO. Everyone is differant, just dont want you to go asking for headaches and empty bank accounts. Good luck.

*EDIT*
Forgot your doing a B16, , , so you would want a B16 or GSR cable trans. YS1 or Y80 or something like that. Not 100% on the numbers. But easy enough to look up.

Hey sorry if I am resurrecting a thread that is a little old, but this is the same swap as myself. Almost the same that is.

I have a 88dx sedan, recently performed my first engine swap for a jdm b16a SiR 1 block.

My story differs in the sense that when I took my swap to the reff he took a look, told me all the things I had to change, gave me the sticker and sent me on my way.

My problem arose after I began the repairs, or conversion to obd1...

Got the p30 ecu, the jumper harness ( ya ya I know....) and the o2 sensor placed. Right now I am in a funk because I can't seem to find the right dizzy for the SiR1 block that is obd1.

I am about ready to sell the damn thing and get something pre 1977...

Living in Cali is good for the beach, women, and parties... Not for civic lovers.

Any help on this would be simply amazing.

Thank you guys.

this is the only good thing about why i moved out of california! here in pa we can swap anything into any vehicle. but depending on what county your in depends on what they test for emissions. the rule here is i can put any engine in my car but i have to keep all the emission control devices the car came with. ex.. if car came with an egr, the new engine has to have an egr. as for the emissions some countys do a visual check to see if the emission control devices are in place and apear to be functional( pluged in) other countys put your car on a dyno and use a 5 gas tester in the tail pipe to make sure your emission control devices are doing their job, and they do a gas cap test to see if it has a good seal as to not leak gas fumes.

make all changes to the car (motor) relevant to that of the first B16 available to the US:
1994-1995 Civic Del Sol Vtec model B16A3
get the distributor, cap, rotor, wires, etc... for this motor and you will be fine.

I have a td44u I will sell you with a 1yr warranty. It's for a obd1 b-series vtec del sol si and gsr. I find it really interesting the ref just gave you the sticker. Where in socal are you located? I will help you install the dizzy if your close. I'd like to know what ref station you went too so whn I'm ready I can schedule my appt there. I'm in the process of getting my b16a bard in my crx. I've done obd1 swap, p30 ecu, skink2 intake manifold and 4 wire o2 sensor. Still need to get a carb legal header and new cat for the exhaust. How much do you wanna sell your ride for? Pm me

Ya the guy at southwestern college is real cool. If you let him talk and sound interested in what he is talking about then he is cool. Don't interrupt him... He gets a little pissed. So the td-44u will work for my block then?

And I will pm you.

Hey all if anyone wants to get their car looked at in southern Cali the number to set up an appointment is going to be 18006227733. Give them a zip code like 92115 and tell them that you want south western college.

I heard horror stories about taking a swap to the reff, and dreading the worst I went with very low expectations, seeing as how it was my first swap, and a JDM one at that! But it went very well, he gave me pointers and parts that need toe replaced and then gave me my sticker, which is like gold!

It gave me time to scrounge up the parts while driving it illegally around San Diego for a good three months.

Any questions feel free to pm me.
