unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
hi, i'm new to this forum ! i recently bought a 93 del sol si ( D16Z6 ) and i'm in the process of working out all the bugs.
i replaced the oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold with a bwd universal oxygen sensor ( bad idea, i know ) and i keep randomly getting check engine code 43. sometimes the check engine light comes on, sometimes it doesn't. so in order to try and fix the check engine light problem, i thought i would find out for sure if this car is supposed to have 2 oxygen sensors or not. then fix the second oxygen sensor if it has one before i label the universal one bad.
some people say that there are two oxygen sensors on a D16Z6 and some people say that there's only one. but i only seem to have one. i've checked the entire exhaust system and the only one my car has is the one thats on the headers. can anyone tell me definitively that there are or aren't two oxygen sensors on a D16Z6 ?

code 43 is not o2 its fuel supply

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
yea, there is a small chance that it could also be the fuel filter / fuel pump / injectors. but it seems like every forum i've searched says that it's more than likely the o2 sensor causing the code. and since i had just recently changed the o2 sensor, i'm leaning toward that as the problem. i really just need to test my fuel pressure at the injectors.
i've heard that wire resistance is more than likely whats causing my check engine code. i've read that when you cut and splice the wires together on a univeral o2 sensor that it changes the resistance just enough to trip the code and send you back to the default fuel maps. i think to fix my problem i just need to get an OEM o2 sensor but wow, big money for a car i've only got 2 grand in.
thanks for the answer markspan. i'm glad i don't have to jack with a second o2.

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
code 43 is fuel supply system....whcih is a fancy word for "replace o2" lol
potential causes could be...
ECU
ECU Ground Supply
Low Engine Vacuum
Leaking Exhaust
Oxygen Sensor
but o2 sensor is number one
and to answer your original question... about how many o2' your car should have you should think of it liek this. if your car is an OBD1 car you will have one o2 sensor. if your car is an OBD2 car..you will have 2 o2 sensors. obd2 started in 1996 so anything below 1996 will be an OBD1 car

for one code 43 does not mean a fancy word for "replace o2" lol, thats why there is a separate code for the o2 sensor, second not all honda's and acura's started to be obd2 in 1996, the 1996 honda prelude is not obd2 its obd1

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
Code 43 can signify a problem with either the O2 sensor or the fuel system (pump, FPR, injectors, etc). If code 43 is accompanied by engine performance problems, then start by troubleshooting the fuel system.

i did some research on honda's oem oxygen sensors and, correct me if i'm wrong, but i found out that in 93, honda brand oxygen sensors were made by denso. so what i did was order a plug & play oxygen sensor straight from denso for 50 bucks. so if i'm right, that means that when honda slaps their box on a denso oxygen sensor, it instantly gains $188 dollars in value for the exact same thing you could get straight from denso for $50.

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
To my knowledge, most cars made after year 2000 have a primary o2 sensor and a secondary o2 sensor. The second sensor is there to monitor exhaust gases and make sure that it falls into the LEV exhaust standards. If you do not connect the second sensor, it will throw a check engine light. Not sure on the secondary sensor for the Z6 but on the Y7 im sure its there.

All 96+ vehicle are OBD2 with secondary o2 sensor.
How many mileages is on your del sol? Replace your fuel filter and the code will go away.

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
I'm experiencing the same problem. There are no leaks in fuel, pressure seems fine, nothing's flooded, replaced the fuel filter, all the spark plugs are brand new, the motor's been freshly rebuilt, and the O2 sensor has been replaced. Yet, I'm receiving code 1 which is "heated oxygen sensor A", and code 43, which is "fuel supply/oxygen sensor malfunction." It only kicks on after 20-30 minutes of driving, or if my RPMs reach over 3500-5000. It varies each time. The O2 sensor used to replace the original factory Denso model is a Bosch Direct Fit. No splicing or cutting required to the harness. The car idles slightly rough, and once the light comes on, the responsiveness seems to drop slightly. My gas mileage went from 30 to about 22 though. I had a leak in the exhaust manifold, but I replaced that gasket and tightened it down and it went away. As far as I can tell, there are no holes in the exhaust piping or leaks. The catalytic converter has been replaced within the past 3 days. I'm at a loss of what to do, aside from changing to a Denso replacement O2 sensor or completely redoing all the exhaust piping. It's a 1993 Del Sol Si, D16Z6 OBD1 engine.

Re: unable to locate secondary o2 sensor 93 del sol
Just to add to your confusion...The B series motors OBDI did have two O2 sensors Both in the exhaust manifold.
The secondary O2 sensor checks the cat's effiency on OBDII cars only. The secondary O2 sensor is located either in the cat or right behind it.
I have spliced the O2 sensor wire on mine and lengthened it without any codes for the past four years.
Check your exhaust manifold for a crack by the O2 sensor when you swap it out.
You can ohm out your injectors to check for a problem with them.
Check your fuel pressure and if you can't remember when you replaced the filter do it. Make sure you check it for leaks BEFORE you drive it.
