Transmission
97 Honda Civic LX
My car will make a dry bearing noise with the clutch out, when depressed it dosent make the noise..When accelerating through the gears it makes the noise until i press the clutch in to shift, when i let it out it does it again.
It does make the noise when in nuetral with the clutch out
Throw out bearing or input shaft bearing?
Does the input shaft always spin?

Re: Transmission
My money is on the throwout bearing. Typically those noise are alleviated when a clutch kit is installed (replaced bearings: Pilot bearing and throwout bearing). I have not encountered the input shaft bearing failure.

You're about the only one then. Seriously, these things go bad all the time, I've replaced a ton of them. The only thing I will say is I had one pilot bearing go bad that showed all the symptoms of a bad ISB until I took everything apart and realized the only bad bearing was the pilot bearing.

No. It's the ISB, no question. The throwout bearing does not turn unless the clutch is depressed. Throwout bearing failure is pretty rate on a Honda.
