I love all these excuses about being scared to hurt the bumper.

<------- got stuck in snow 2 years ago, towed my car from the factory tow hook, and my bumper is just fine.
Yes, my car was lowerd.

I think it depends on the car's set up.

Towing from my factory tow hooks probably wouldn't be a great idea because my car is really low and the lips are really beefy.

I agree with nofx. for example I put an OEM honda lip on my friends 2007 accord ( 2005 lip with some slight modification) the instructions from honda say to take off the lip before towing. after installing its clear that the lip covers up the front tow hooks. thus i went out and got her a front tow hook from BDL. shes a girl, shes not gonna take off the lip of the car needs to be towed and nor is the tow truck driver. the car is lowered as well. i dont need some ******* tow truck driver tearing off her $300 lip that cant be replaced.

another example: a friend of mine with a stock 1992 integra had to get towed, and the tow truck driver tore off the bumper while towing it. the tow company just wrote in the report that the bumper was like that before towing to cover their ***...

That sucks, I watched a retarded tow truck driver tear my friends ctr lip off.

He was pulling and lifting the front end. The lip broke, and the guy was like, oh well. Not my problem.

But like NOFX said, it depends on the car, and how it's setup.
I've seen low cars with lips be put on tow trucks and not have any problems. Excepts for the one

How low the car is, how big the lip is, if any lip plays a big part in it.

Personaly, I'll never trust them.

I'm a girl as well, but I don't think that has anything to do with my unwillingness to remove my front lip or bumper before my car gets towed from the side of the road. Ever since my car was stolen, they used my tools to steal my parts and then they stole my tools, I've not kept tools in my car (besides tire change kit).

Removing parts of the car on the side of the road is horribly inconvenient. Especially such a large part.

It's somewhat inconvenient. I changed a timing belt on the side of the road once, that was horribly inconvenient.

its cheap insurance to have a tow hook/ strap. no one wants there car damaged (but then again, you probably did if you need a tow lol). idk why this is being argued lol. why do race cars have them? because they're more functional.

please don't bring up not needing race parts on a street car..... if you try bringing that argument then why mod your car at all lol. do you have aftermarket seats? harnesses? suspension? engine performance? anything? its all personal preference anyway. can we all be friends now lol

No, that was insane. The car could have been towed to a place where it could be fixed in better conditions.

If I'm on my way back from shopping or work and my car breaks down in the middle of the night, removing the bumper just to I can get towed somewhere is pretty damn inconvenient. The whole situation is inconvenient.

A properly installed nylon tow strap is "cheap insurance," if there really is a need for such a thing. It can also be tucked away out of sight when not needed.

A Benen tow hook is "expensive as ****" insurance. $80+ for a simple machined chunk of aluminum? Honestly...

this thread is still going? I'd say those "shiny" tow hooks do the same job as the factory ones... but of course people get them for the looks. But I don't see anything wrong with that. Have you guys forgotten all the other much dumber crap people buy for about 80 bucks?

My take: Your DAILY car shouldn't be THAT low to necessitate the use of tow hooks. For the people that have lips (and the Accord example) I might be able to understand. But to have your car low enough where you NEED a tow hook just to get it towed? I'll never understand. Having your car dumped as a daily is already stupid enough.

I dont have a tow hook yet . But im looking to getting one. I carry a kayak on my roof rack and i need a tow hook to extend from my factory tow hook. I need it extended because the rope will grind against my bumper.

I liked the idea of that red nylon cloth tow hook in the picture above. I wonder if that is just looped through the stock tow hook, and then pulled through the bumper grill? That sounds like it would fix the issue right there for people with lips and to low for truck beds. You can remove it and keep it in the car when not needed, but when needed you can loop it through the stock tow hook, and pull it through the bumper grill for a safe, strong, functional tow hook.

I still wonder if those are strong enough to pull the vehicle up onto a flatbed...

Only one way to find out.

If I was pulling it into a flat bed i still use the factory tow hook. But don't forget, that's even attached to sheet metal.

Why do people argue about car parts? It's your car. Get what you want. If something breaks because you bought something and put it on, it's your own fault.

But but.. form > function!!

Not. I want to be lower than what I am now. Is it a good idea? Nope. But I hate wheel gap .
