There might be a slight compression difference and also the y8 comes with a knock sensor the y7 does not.

The compression difference comes from the pistons, not the block. The Y7 still has provisions for the knock sensor. The bare blocks themselves are the same.

The service manual doesn't seem to indicate a compression difference between the Y7 and Y8, but maybe I'm not interpreting it correctly.

It was more surprising to me that the manual suggests that the B16A2 also should have the same compression.

Eh, those are just compression test numbers, which aren't indicative of actual compression ratio. The Y7 is 9.4:1, the Y8 is 9.6:1, and the A2 is 10.2:1 stock.

There seems to be a part number difference between pistons but people do mini-me swaps on the y7 with no ill effects. We don't even know what you're trying to do with either blocks but if its just the difference in parts than yes they are different.

simple search on oem honda parts sites can clear that question for you.

Trust me I have both blocks
The bare blocks are the same.
There are different internals which make them different.

Mainly the pistons.
Yes the y8 has a knock sensor but that's not part of the block. The y7 are tap for one also.
everything else is the same. Use the same crank, oil pump etc...

The oil pans are different. Simply steel vs aluminum.

11000-P2E-810

Part number for the bare block with caps. Same part number between the DX and EX. Same block.

Thanks for all the input and advice, I really appreciate it. My y8 block I'd cracked and I can't seem to track one down to replace it, but I can find y7's all day long. Looks like I'm picking up a y7. Thanks again everyone
