Is an SI worth it?

Re: Is an SI worth it?
It is getting extremely hard to find an em1 with a clean title... Mine has a clean title but has been wrecked twice... lol. Nothing major that i can see, but I just got it. The salvage title will affect resale drastically. I paid $3,700 for mine and it needs quite a bit of work.. I probably got jipped, but oh well. I would rather have an in-tact SI, than a clone etc... Just stay away from any si's with swaps, unless you have someone knowledgable with you to make sure the swaps were done right. The first SI I looked at had an h22 swap and was complete garbage... Take your time and save up. You can find a nice unmolested SI for around $6000...

Re: Is an SI worth it?
There is quite a number of EM1's available in Canada, that's for sure. I really want to modify mine, but at the same time, there's nothing like having a completely factory EM1.
The one thing I like more about the canadian models over the US models is that we have the "SiR" badge on the back, and not just the "Si"
The downfall is having ABS brakes on the Canadian EM1's. I really don't like them!
I picked mine up in June 2010. It's a 1999, and had 137,000km (~86,000mi) on it. Clean title. All matching VINs. Owned originally by a middle aged woman (I'm the 2nd owner). The only things changed are that I put smoked film on the headlights to protect from rock chips, and I hated all the chrome in the stock headlight housing, and the summer wheels which are from a 2004 [canadian] Si sedan. The original wheels are used for winter. Installed OEM fogs (not in pics), and that's it. Not changing a single other thing... as badly as I sometimes want to!
Mine looks like a 4x4 monster truck, but the EM1s look absolutely gorgeous with a simple drop, even on stock wheels. I hear just adding the AEM V2 intake on the EM1s makes the engine sound drop dead sexy too, especially in VTEC. It's pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for.
Is an EM1 worth it? I think so. I feel that if I can take care of the car as well as the previous owner did, this car will be a gem in years to come. It is definitely fun to drive, although the lack of torque is kinda frustrating at times. It handles nicely right out of the box, the engine sounds great especially when tearing into VTEC, and the fit-and-finish of everything is pretty sweet too.

'00 EM1 Si with 106k original miles. For having a B20 instead of the B16 just paid $3600... A/C, full coilovers, everything works. Completely clean. I'm now shopping for a B16a or thinking of going B20Vtec...

Oh man, I think you would kick yourself by going to a B16. The revs are super nice, but you will instantly miss the torque of your B20. But a B20vtec on the other hand.... hmmm.... now that sounds interesting :D

Yeah, ABS in ice and snow does suck, I'll agree with that. It takes forever to stop. Pull the fuse in the winter? Lol.

Re: Is an SI worth it?
If your planning on modding your Civic, there is completely no point in getting a Si. It is cheaper to buy a EX and swap out the motor, and eventually if your swapping motors you'll be putting in suspension which then you'll be paying for the EM1 VIN tags and the paint, cluster, DOHC Vtec decal.... But if you are really getting a EM1, be sure to check if the frame is straight and the goodies that come with the Si. Then change out the alarm for sure. ^_^

for those who would like to see the fishiest Si advertisement *Jeremy Clarkson voice* IN THE WORLD.
lol, something's majorly wrong with this car for it to be as he describes and only be 2000.
Perhaps its one of those go to look at it and get robbed things.

The are "crazy" amounts of nice cars out there people own that are also easy to steal. Hell, 99% of the cars you see at the Barrett Jackson Auctions are super nice but easy to steal. Solution, keep it secure!
Many other models of civic's and inetgra's get stolen all the time too. I think these new systems with a hidden gps is a great idea.

I think the whole stolen thing is over blown......

Honestly I think they are cool and I see why some people love them, but I wouldn't go out of my way and/or pay $1000+ more for an EM1 over a lower model.
I do appreciate them and I'm sure others who don't really care to own them do too. Very sharp car. I cringe when I see someone driving theirs in the snow.

Re: Is an SI worth it?
My 2 cents is this, if you want the car, I say go for it. As long as the car is in great condition, nothing major happened to the car (went into lake, major crash, etc..) I say go for it. Since it says salvaged, you can use that to your advantage and attempt to get the price cheaper from the seller.

Re: Is an SI worth it?
I bought a 99 Si in 2008 for 5k. Clean title only needed to fix a small dent in passenger fender. Later sold it for profit.
I just bought a 00 Si last week also for 5k. Clean title just needed to change passenger side axle.

Re: Is an SI worth it?
I think since more Si are accepted as Salvage than theft. That is where I was trying to get. I feel that people will ask less if it is salvage (Accident) thane Salvage (Theft) Because theft is so common

To swap in a B16, you'll need $1800-2500. Plus, you'll need the expensive *** Si power steering pump, and a CR-V bracket to mount the A/C compressor. So there goes your "cost savings" after your motor swap.
Even if you have the valid argument that the B16A sucks and you'll end up wanting a real motor anyway, consider the cost of the following items that come standard on the EM1:
With a lower model, you'll still be left with no rear disk, no amber lit interior, no Si cluster, etc. The EX comes with the same 10.1'' front brakes as the EM1, but the other models come with the shitty 9.5'' front brakes.
Once you're done with your aftermarket spring/shock/coilover install, you'll still be missing the CTR front LCAs and 26mm sway bar. The useless rear sway bar will be missing too, FWIW.
You'll have to paint your own side skirts.
You'll have to buy an aftermarket lip.
There are host of other things that come standard on the EM1 that people with lower models end up buying aftermarket....and remember...for things like lips, there's no quality like OEM quality....and OEM lips are EXPENSIVE.
Immitation is the best form of flattery. Most people that bought an EX to start want to emulate the Si's looks and everything else. This costs MUCH more money than just buying the Si in the first place.
Besides all the tangible things, having an EM1 is MUCH cooler than having a "clone" or something lame, IMO. Yes, the EM1 VIN is worth something by itself. Again, I likened it to having a real ITR rather than having some lame *** GSR or LS or RS "clone".

Re: Is an SI worth it?
Well, I love my Si, everybody compliments the car no matter what. I think I'm going with the B20Vtec conversion to stick with the Vtec (plus is cheaper and more reliable hp) for me, I still have the B16 tranny, fully upgraded suspension, exhaust, with a nice intake manifold and a couple more addons should be prowling 200whp NA. I'll be happy with that since I don't want a race car, I want a nice looking decently fast DD. I'm happy with the car, strong torque motor, so, I'm good so far.

Yeah, I'm suprised by all the compliments I'm still getting on my 11 year old EM1. What I really love about the car is the amount of aftermarket support. When I get bored I just buy another part to install.

Re: Is an SI worth it?
I don't think EM1's in particular have a larger aftermarkets part market than any other 96-00 civic.
You might be able to say that for all 99-00 civics, I think they're more popular because of the front end.
