never really seen anything like this, i always thought the point of an air intake was to get better airflow to the motor while also still filtering out harmful debris. this looks like it would suck up water like a shamwow.

less resistance i would guess, definitely not worth the risk in my opinion. There would probably be almost no difference in airflow. Just a dumb idea.

yeah less resistance, and yeah there is some resistance but not enough to take the risk of swallowing something up

less resistance? haha. of that was this guys reasoning just take off the whole elbow and everything. just let it suck straight air through the intake manifold. haha.

no if he did that he would be sucking straight hot air, hence the elbow with the heat wrap.

Why are you face palming? prime-R said it right. It gets colder air this way. Colder air is more dense thus you get more air in, therefore more fuel, which results in more power.

heat wrapping just keeps the actual heat inside the elbow, isnt that bad?

not if the intake is taking in cooler air

but it wouldnt be. after the motor heats up, all the ait under the hood is pretty much the same temperature, correct?

hmm, i understand the simple logic behind it but looking at it makes me concerned about it consuming the contaminates in the engine bay, maybe paint chip, debris from oil leaks, pebbles kicking up into the engine bay from the bottom and dust..in which im sure neither can be good for the motor.

I've seen some cars on here with the same style intake and i've always wondered the same thing.

yup,but thats why its located their by the headlight to help out a little but at the end of the day it will suck some hot air, like at a redlight where there is no flow going threw but atleast while driving it helps out a little

If that's the case then why don't people just run CAI's without filters? You could even take the bumper off and have "ram air" too, they're both really dumb ideas IMO. I'd rather have the extra cash in my pocket from not having to rebuild my motor because some **** got sucked in from not using a filter.

I use this setup but I remove a headlight and pull it out thru there. It made a 1mph difference at the track on a friends car, and helped me out a lot too. Its a track only setup, because obviously im missing that headlight, but its a noticeable difference. 3" tubing. NEVER HAD AN ISSUE.

On the other hand, the setup on the pic. . . defeats the purpose. My setup sucks air entirely outside of the engine bay.

thats what i said in my first post, the power that is gain by doing that is not worth the risk of sucking some crap up,i wouldnt do it and wouldnt recommend it either

With a stock motor; pointless. With a built motor and the headlight removed; you may pick up 5-10 mph and a considerable iat drop. That means HP. TRACK USE ONLY! Tracks are cleaned of most of the kinds of stuff you guys are talking about the engine sucking up before every race. And you aren't allowed on a track with oil leaks.

And you don't have cars in FRONT of you at the track lifting up crap that has already stated is NOT on the track to begin with. . . also can't suck up oil if the big mouth thing is entirely outside the engine bay.

ALSO, it rocks my stock motor, B16A3 155whp I/H/E

I wasn't saying it's a good idea to run the intake without a filter. That's bad if it's a street driven car. But even a filter can't prevent from water from getting in the intake if it gets in its way.

You dont necessarily get more power because there is less resistance since there is no filter. in IMPORT TUNER May 09 they tested a short ram with and with out filter. The test with the filter on pulled about 1 whp more than with it off. Then they used a AEM CAI with and w/o filter. With filter it pulled almost 2 whp more than with it off. its all about velocity stacks.

IMO this is just stupid if its your daily driver. Even on track i wouldnt think its a good idea.
I work at Texas World Speedway and all the time i have drivers going 4 off and kickin dirt and rocks everywhere and then we gotta clean that **** up. but not before 3-4 cars behind him have driven through it.
