Default Please help with rattling noise

Hello all,

I am trying to understand a noise that is coming from my 2000 honda civic. There is a rattling noise best described as one that is like touching the tip of a pen on the moving blades of a plastic desk fan when it is powered on. It is only intermittent and goes away on its own after a minute or so, or if I turn off the fan using the A/C ****. However the rattling increases as I accelerate and decreases when decelerating, so it is not a consistent volume. This is the best I can do to describe it without taking a recording, and any help on what to check would be appreciated. I plan to see if there is something in the blower fan, but I am not sure if that is even the problem.

Thanks

Something probably caught in your fan maybe?

How's your oil level?
Does it make this sound while turning?
Does it ever make the noise when the fans are off?

Thanks for the replies.
I just had a complete fluid replacement , oil change and other preventative maintenance done about a month ago. Today during driving, I have now ruled out the fan as being the problem, because there is no sound when the fan is on without the A/C being on. When I press the A/C button to turn it on, the sound starts for a few moments before going away, or until I turn off the fan. What could be the broken part? Also there is no sound when the fans are off. Thanks.

Well I took it to the mechanic and it has been diagnosed as a broken compressor. I am debating whether to buy the parts and do it myself (although i have no experience) or take it to the shop for labor. Any recommendations for a good compressor? I am thinking of getting this one:

Are there ones manufactured by Honda (OEM)?

If you don't have experience with A/C or car work, then you are best off paying a professional.

In brief, the job entails:

  • Recovering of the refrigerant
  • Removing compressor
  • Flushing system of debris generated by failed compressor
  • Installing new compressor with new oil and receiver/dryer
  • Placing the system under a deep vacuum
  • Leak testing system
  • Recharging with proper volume of oil and weight of refrigerant
