Need help..tranny or clutch???
hey h-t, i recently purchased an 94 civic ex and i think either my tranny or my clutch is going. the reason i think this is because whenever i put it into reverse it grinds(sometimes) and i cant downshift to second gear wen car is rolling also downshifting to other gears is a struggle sometimes....i cant switch from 1st to 2nd without it grinding or mis-shifting when racing( so at high rpms) everything is fine if i switch at 3k or around there...........so if any of you guys might know what it could be let me know thankz....

try dumping the tranny fluid and replace it with gm syncromesh. baby the tranny for a while. normally it will help with the grinding(wont fix).

Its the tranny, try changing the fluid with syncromesh and see where that gets you, but your syncro's are going out and will have to replaced at some point, so it'll end up being new syncro's or another tranny in the end.

if you double clutch and take your time, does it still do it? if not synchro is likely toast. can you go thru the gears without using the clutch at all?

yea i mean if i play through the gears before putting it in reverse its find...when im stopped and i put it into first , and soo on its okay, it only grinds when im shifting at high rpms or when i put it in reverse without playing through the gears first....

its simple. step on clutch, shift to neutral, let off clutch (this forces the gears to sync up, required in syncro-less trannys), step on clutch again, shift to desired gear, let off clutch.
as well there are points where you can easily change gears without a clutch at all (3.3 - 3.4k rpm on my setup), if you learn to shift at those points (while still using the clutch), there is virtually no strain on the transmission. I had a completely borkt transmission last like a year using those techniques.
