My new HX - need advice on misfire, EGR, and O2 sensor codes
Hello,
Just purchased a bone stock 97 HX 5spd from my friend. Its got 220K on the odo. Idles a little rough but off idle runs fine and has a few codes.
P0141 65 Secondary HO2S Heater Circuit Fault (Sensor 2)
P0301 71 Misfire Cyl. 1 Or Random Misfire
P0303 73 Misfire Cyl. 3 Or Random Misfire
P1300 71–74 Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0401 80 EGR Insufficient Flow Detected
P1399 Misfire??
Im gonna do the cap and rotor plugs and wires too. Also going to clean the egr system and replace the fuel filter.
Anyone else think of anything that needs to be done?
When cleaning egr, did you get new orings for the injectors like the teggers write up recommends?

Re: My new HX
The ignition system tune up is always a good idea, but cleaning the EGR valve and chamber will probably eliminate all codes except the 2nd O2 sensor heater. For the latter, check whether fuse 15 is blown and measure the resistance of the heater element.

Re: My new HX - need advice on misfire, EGR, and O2 sensor codes
Congrats on the new purchase. I think that is the same writeup that I had used when I cleaned mine out. You can leave the fuel line attached to the rail and just lift it out of the way because if you do that then you don't have to worry about the o-ring. I would replace the fuel filter as well and you will need the right set of flare nut wrenches to do so, I picked up a 3 pack of wrenches from Advance long ago that works perfectly so please do not try to use a normal wrench on the fittings you will just end up rounding them off and creating a lot of frustration for yourself.
You can def. clean the egr yourself and will take you an evening to do it your first time. I highly recommend a gun cleaning brush in the size of .22 caliber for cleaning out the holes, I picked one up at my local walmart and a handle to go with it for just a few bucks, also you will need a bristle brush or an old toothbrush to clean the chamber and cover plate. You can order new gaskets for the egr valve and chamber gasket from Majestic Honda.

Re: My new HX - need advice on misfire, EGR, and O2 sensor codes
Thanks for the replies. The O2 sensor was broken in half so I assume that was throwing the code. A new one is on its way. Plugs, fuel filter, distributor, wires, and oil are done. I pulled the egr apart cleaned and got new injector seals. My question now is how important is the egr gasket and can I use a bead of rtv on the old gasket. The reason being is that I have all the parts right now to put it back together. So I dont want to wait for a new gasket(dealer wont have one till after weekend) and I also dont want to spend the $30 if RTV will work.
I ordered the gasket and am just gonna wait. I learned a long time ago that its better to do things right the first time.

Yeah use the actual gasket for the egr valve, when I cleaned mine out I went over to Advance and they had it in stock and didn't cost very much at all. The oem gasket is a lot thicker than the one I got but has been working fine.

I was referring to the egr chamber plate gasket. All is done and the thing runs great no check engine light. Just took her for a 100 mile trip with the ac on full blast the whole time. I will be redoing the headliner and sunvisors next.

Re: My new HX - need advice on misfire, EGR, and O2 sensor codes
I have both a 97 & 99 hx's the 99 just started the dreaded p0420 code so getting ready to take out the o2 sensor so I can remove the heat shield to look for cracks. I am kinda torn about it actually I had just invested a lot of money in the motor replacing timing belt/water pump and all the seals and gaskets with the exception of the rear main seal but now the tranny needs to be replaced as well so I am comtemplating on swapping it completely out or just replacing the tranny.
I've ordered new sunvisors last summer from Majestic so they should still be available for you, I've replaced both driver's side but would like to get new passenger ones at some point.
Those egr codes can be quite a pain and I finally solved it on my 99 when I cleaned and swapped over the 97 over to it and it hasn't came back since. I tried cleaning the other egr valve twice but it still threw a code. I've since bought a new valve for the 97 from Majestic which does include the gasket.
